DescriptionThe Custodial Tech is responsible for providing professional housekeeping in residence halls and reports to the Assistant Director of Housing Facilities Operations.
This position requires the incumbent to wear non-slip steel shoes university shirt pants belt (if necessary) and campus ID as part of the uniform. This position performs routine custodial tasks per established schedules and housekeeping standards.
This is a fast-paced setting where specific job assignments shifts and locations may vary within our residence halls as necessary to meet the departments needs. Custodians participate in on-call schedules and work long hours during the summer months and the schedule may be changed depending on the departmental needs.
Responsibilities- Performs routine custodial tasks such as sweeping dusting mopping vacuuming extracting blowing removing trash cleaning stairs washing walls and baseboards cleaning windows and window coverings cleaning and polishing mirrors cleaning appliances and furniture
- Moves sofas chairs tables desks mattresses and beds to accomplish cleaning tasks
- Safely operates all vehicles and other job-related equipment
- Strips and refinishes floors (vct vinyl tile wood etc.)
- Shampoos carpets and upholstery in suites apartments hallways lobbies community spaces study rooms kitchenettes and offices within residential halls
- Cleans bathroom showers tubs stalls toilets glass mirrors sinks and walls using housekeeping chemicals materials and equipment
- Restocks restrooms with all necessary materials and products
- Wears necessary PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) as required
- Reports problems incidents damages or building repairs needed and as directed by supervisors and maintains necessary records
- Properly handles and disposes of recycling materials and follows instructions regarding the use of chemicals and supplies
- Provides quality customer service to staff students and campus visitors
- Checks email participates in required University trainings submits work request and work orders
- Performs light maintenance duties as needed such as replacing screw type light bulbs inspects for discolorations cleans vent covers sprays air cleaning products and places room size air scrubbers/fans
- Performs additional duties as assigned or required to meet Housing & Residential Life and University goals and objectives
The ideal candidate will possess the following:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. bend twist pull reach climb stairs and ladders
- Ability to drive according to the University of Tennessee Safety Policy if required
- Ability to work in a detailed-oriented team environment
- Basic computer skills
- Communicates effectively and professionally in the workplace
- Demonstrated knowledge and use of housekeeping chemicals and equipment
- Demonstrated skill in the operation of carpet cleaning and floor cleaning equipment such as buffers extractors scrubbers and power washers

QualificationsMinimum: Requires a high school diploma or the equivalent and six months of custodial experience or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.
Preferred: Vocational or technical training and 1 year of custodial experience in a commercial or institutional setting is preferred.
