This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable practical experience that will prepare you to work in local government administration on policy development & implementation legislative affairs strategic planning equity & inclusion initiatives and community engagement.

The intern will assist the City Managers Office and the City Council Offices with a range of projects related to the Citys strategic priorities. The intern will be responsible for research and drafting of public policy projects and/or community events. The internship provides exposure to city governance with a focus on executive leadership as well as community and legislative affairs. This opportunity offers an excellent introduction to inner workings of local government and public services.

  • An ability to think creatively work independently and handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent writing verbal and visual communication skills.
  • Ability to analyze organize and present information & data using Microsoft Excel Word PPT and other software tools.
  • Comfort seeking guidance and incorporating direction and feedback as necessary.
  • Discretion regarding sensitive information.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Working cooperatively with departments and public on the Citys strategic plan equity initiatives and special projects such as preparing for the 2028 Games.
  • Assist with equity and inclusion research and initiatives by gathering data and supporting projects recommendation.
  • Draft and edit written documents such as staff reports letters resolutions proclamations.
  • Assist with the coordination of City special events and programs.
  • Work cooperatively with City employees and the public.
  • Research policy issues and analyze data for staff reports studies and other functions.
  • Providing administrative support including occasional coverage of public-facing reception desk and Department phone line.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Must currently be pursuing a degree in Public Administration Public Policy Political Science Government Leadership Urban Planning or a closely-related field. Graduate student is required. Eligibility to remain in the program is contingent upon school enrollment.
  • Students who are interested in a six-month commitment or longer are required.
  • Students must be able to work approximately 20 hours per week during normal business hours.
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule including occasional evenings and weekends.
  • This position is not eligible for remote work.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Must demonstrate excellent writing and communication skills and have the ability to think creatively work independently and handle multiple projects.
