Licensed dedicated Upper School College Counselor needed at IC Imagine Charter School in Asheville. The school counselor will work with the other members of the counseling department to plan and carry out an effective school counseling program. The college counselor aids children in the preparation of necessary college entrance documentation and ensures that these students are meeting all requirements to enter a college upon graduating from high school.

Salary based on IC Imagines Salary Schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Informing students and families about the college entrance process and ensuring that each student meets the academic and registration requirements at each step of this process.
  • Assessing students academic progress to meet requirements of specific colleges and college programs.
  • Support students in satisfying college entrance exam requirements.
  • Support students in completing college applications. This could include writing recommendation letters contacting college admissions offices and providing students with detailed information about the specific colleges they are considering.
  • Support students with the completion of required documents such as college essays and financial aid paperwork.
  • Help students gather information about courses taken grades grade point average and other pertinent details a college might ask for on an application.
  • Assisting students with finding out about scholarships and other supportive programs.
  • Understanding financial aid requirements for students of varying needs.
  • Developing programs to teach students and parents about the college admissions process.
  • Communicating with college admissions and financial aid departments.
  • Keep updated about college entrance requirements by conducting visits to college campuses and meeting with admissions and financial aid representatives.
  • Arrange for college personnel to visit high school students to talk about college entrance and the college experience and arrange for students to visit local colleges.
  • Maintain working relationships with various colleges and universities.
  • Provide individual counseling and group Social Emotional skill building to help students cope effectively with personal social academic and family concerns.
  • Work as a team with the school staff parents and the community to create a caring climate and atmosphere.
  • Communicate effectively with all members of the IC Imagine community.
  • Support the value of education.
  • Manage 504 plans and related documents.
  • Assist in making recommendations for Social Emotional Learning curriculum instructional practices and the scope and sequence for the year.
  • Keep abreast of new information innovative ideas and techniques.
  • Work as a part of the schools student support (MTSS) team to problem solve individual students academic social emotional and behavioral needs.
  • Support continued development of Social Emotional Behavioral tiers of support within our MTSS framework including the facilitation of SEL universal screenings.
  • Collaborate with other members of the Mental Health team teachers support staff and the IC Imagine community to enhance the educational opportunities for all students.
  • Serve as a member of IC Imagines Crisis Response Team as well as our local charter school team.
  • Work as a member of the schools Behavioral Threat Assessment Team (conducting interviews) and supporting the development of corresponding support plans.
  • Conduct Suicide Risk Assessments within a team and support the development of individual support plans
  • Follow the processes laid out in the faculty handbook respond to emails in a timely manner and correspond regularly with families.
  • Will perform additional duties including but not limited to supervision during non-instructional time attending after school events and meetings participating in enrollment activities during and leading into the Open Enrollment period.
  • Adhere to all legal and ethical requirements of the teaching profession and set an example for others to do the same.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled in problem solving and decision making as well as observation listening and coaching
  • Ability to work with a diverse student body.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing
  • Maintain effective working relationships
  • Possess strong time management skills
  • Ability to prioritize workload and multitask in a busy environment
  • Proficiency with GSuite SCOIR Infinite Campus

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum Masters Degree
  • Valid North Carolina Counseling license
  • College Counseling Certificate preferred must have willingness to complete during first three years of employment
  • College admissions experience preferred
  • 3 years experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of standing kneeling squatting reaching and bending
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds at times
