Job Summary

We have an opening for a Maintenance Coordinator who will work under minimal supervision to provide technical support. You will provide hands on mechanical fabrication and testing duties on an assortment of components for various projects and processes that require the operation of equipment machine and hand tools. This position is in the Radioactive and Hazardous Waste Management Program (RHWM) within the Strategic Deterrence Directorate.

This position requires full-time on-site presence due to the nature of the work.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

In this role you will:

  • Perform tasks supporting the maintenance cleanup and repair of equipment within RHWM nuclear and radiological facilities utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment as determined by work control documents and perform monthly crane inspections and maintain a detailed log of these inspections.
  • Operate equipment (Class C motor vehicles light tractors fork trucks hand lifts and JLG boom and scissor lifts etc.) used in maintenance and repair within and around RHWM facilities.
  • Perform informal equipment and systems reviews checking for maintenance and failures noting any deficiencies and reporting findings for implementation of corrections to supervisor.
  • Oversee and escort other LLNL organizations or subcontract personnel performing work in RHWM facilities.
  • Strong commitment to customer service necessary to effectively respond to customers.
  • Occasional overtime shift and/or weekend work may be required to accomplish work assignments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities at the 533.3 level

  • Identify analyze design and provide solutions and alternate approaches to various process equipment and fabrication problems.
  • Independently fabricate components from print and/or sketch specifications; fabricate fixtures as needed for positioning holding or stabilizing parts during the fabrication process.
  • Setup and operate fabrication machine tools use hand tools and measuring instruments and apply advanced knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes to the solution of fabrication problems related to process equipment.

Qualifications :

  • Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Associates degree in mechanical industrial manufacturing or a technology related certificate or equivalent combination of education and experience in a field of engineering that includes mechanical training.
  • Demonstrated mechanical technical skills (e.g. knowledge of machine shop practices and procedures) and knowledge of engineering principles and materials necessary to develop solutions to mechanical problems.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate and consult with team members and requesters from other organizations and the ability to work scheduled shift weekend and emergency overtime as needed.
  • Experience performing duties including but not limited to tracking inventory and maintenance schedules using hand and power tools and the ability to layout and install parts and equipment set up and evaluate new equipment per manufacturers recommendations all while adapting to changing priorities schedules and assignments both independently and as part of a team with other disciplines.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Drivers Class C License.
  • Ability to lift up to 80 pounds using the proper personal protective equipment and team lifting techniques and to read operational safety procedures interpret requirements and apply safety controls to job requirements.
  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats safety shoes safety glasses hearing protection face shield and gloves and all controls including PPE are identified during the work planning actions where hazards are identified and controls are established.
  • Demonstrated effective customer service and communication skills to interface well with others.
  • Basic knowledge of Environmental Safety & Health (ES&H) laws and regulations (e.g. OSHA RCRA).

Additional qualifications at the 533.3 level

  • Experience fabricating mechanical components from metals and plastics designing fixtures brackets and various mechanical components using computers and mechanical/electrical testing equipment.
  • Advanced technical skills e.g. knowledge of machine shop practices and procedures and knowledge of engineering principles and materials necessary to develop solutions and alternative approaches to moderately complex problems and make effective fabrication decisions that result in maximum use of resources.
  • Experience wearing PPE and following administrative controls for working with hazardous systems/environments (e.g. chemical radiological).

Qualifications We Desire

  • Experience working in a high hazardous environment (e.g. chemical radiological).
  • Experience installing and/or maintaining waste treatment units and tank/piping systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of ES&H laws and regulations.
  • Advanced knowledge of RHWM facilities and equipment.
