Job Summary
Position Summary
The Department of Music at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill seeks a part-time Instructor to direct the Nyai Saraswati Gamelan Ensemble a student-community ensemble whose repertoire specializes in Central Javanese Karawitan with occasional explorations of Sundanese and Balinese traditions as well as collaborative and fusion genres. This is a one-semester appointment with teaching responsibilities beginning on January 7 2026 and concluding on May 6 2026 though the position may be renewed in future semesters. Duties will include recruiting students into the ensemble supervising the set-up and striking of the equipment before and after rehearsals preparing music and directing the ensemble during all rehearsals and concerts. MUSC 212.004 meets from 7:00 to 9:30 PM on Wednesday evenings in Hill Hall room 107.
Preferred Qualifications Competencies And Experience
At least one year of experience directing or performing in a Javanese or Balinese gamelan ensemble is preferred. Masters in Music or equivalent education is also preferred.
