The Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures at Yale University is looking to hire a full-time tenure track appointment beginning July 1 2026. The rank of the position is open. The field of the search is realism expansively or narrowly defined with emphasis on the transitional period of the long nineteenth century. Methodology and disciplinary orientation should supplement and complement that of the current faculty. We expect our new colleague to contribute to instruction in the graduate and undergraduate German programs as well as to contribute to cross-disciplinary initiatives with departments and programs such as (but not limited to): Directed Studies; Ethnicity Race and Migration; Film and Media Studies; Humanities; Womens Gender and Sexuality Studies. The teaching expectation is normally 4 courses per academic year plus service to the program (especially in the roles of Director of Graduate Studies Director of Undergraduate Studies and Chair).
The appointee must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in German Studies or a related field or have completed all requirements of the degree by the time of hire. Applicants should have native or near-native fluency in German and demonstrated excellence in teaching.
