Position Overview

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a policy-making administrator State Epidemiologist. Serves as Departments liaison with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta Georgia and the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and with other epidemiologists in other states relating to the causes and control of diseases. Provides leadership for multi-disciplinary rapid response teams (RRT) when implemented during outbreak or event investigations including identification of RRT members during an outbreak and developing and implementing policy and direction of the RRT.

  • Serves as the State of Illinois voting member to the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) and the Departments liaison with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta Georgia and the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and with other epidemiologists in other states relating to the causes and control of diseases.
  • Provides medical consultation to local health departments physicians the CDC and other public agencies within the scope of their residence or board certification.
  • Plans develops and directs appropriate educational materials to public and private health care professionals and the public.
  • Serves as full-line supervisor.
  • Provides leadership for multi-disciplinary rapid response teams (RRT) when implemented during outbreak or event investigations including identification of RRT members during an outbreak and developing and implementing policy and direction of the RRT.
  • Provide medical services and consultation within the scope of their residency or board certification.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required which are reasonably withing the scope of those enumerated above.

Minimum Requirements

  • Requires an Illinois license to practice medicine and the completion of an approved related medical specialty residency as established by an American Board of Medical Specialties.
  • Requires three (3) years of substantive medical administrative experience in the directing planning and evaluating a medical/clinical program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five (5) years public health practice in a local state or federal public health agency.
  • One (1) year of experience in overseeing evaluating assessing and developing data analytics and informatics.
  • Two (2) years of experience in developing content and presenting to clinical community media and legislative stakeholders.
  • Masters degree or doctoral degree in public health biostatistics or epidemiology public policy health law or other related fields.
  • One (1) year of experience in writing reviewing or assessing public health grants.
