The Role

Researches plans designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments controls robots engines machines and mechanical thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production transmission measurement and use of energy. Applies research to the planning design development and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems instruments controls engines and/or machines.

This position is for the Alexandria Engineering Office within the E35 Department (Submarine Engineering - Advanced Capabilities). Should be able to collaborate and perform within a cross-functional team. This position will regularly work and communicate with other Engineers/Designers across Departments via email phone and in person meetings.

Must Have

Bachelors Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Masters Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The ideal candidate will have the following experience/attributes:

Hydraulic systems pneumatic systems or electro-mechanical systems
MATLAB
FEA
Experience with Inventor 3D or other 3D modeling software
Significant interest in learning from others
Interested in solving challenging problems
Comfortable researching and developing solutions in new areas (with limited previous exposure)
Appreciates learning new skills and investigating innovative technologies
Self-starter proficient communicator and active listener
