Founded in 1968 to meet the post-secondary and continuing education needs of Cecil County residents Cecil College has been serving the community and shaping its future for more than 50 years. The College is governed by a Board of Trustees appointed by the governor. The Colleges fifth president Dr. Mary Way Bolt reports directly to the Board of Trustees.

Cecil College is centrally located in Marylands most northeastern county just one half mile from Interstate 95. It is easily accessible from Philadelphia and Baltimore as well as from Wilmington Delaware.

With a diverse student population Cecil College enrolls approximately 2500 credit students and 3400 non-credit students. Cecil offers associate degrees certificate programs and non-credit classes. Cecil offers a variety of associate degree and certificate programs.

Employees of Cecil College including instructors for online and virtual courses must be residents of Maryland or the contiguous states of Delaware Pennsylvania Virginia West Virginia or the District of Columbia.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Academic Advisor is responsible for providing advising services consistent with the mission vision and core values of Cecil College. Responsibilities include assisting students with educational and career goals by way of individual and group advisement sessions; working in collaboration with faculty to maximize curricular connections and opportunities for educational advancement; building and sustaining quality relationships with advisees; and helping to facilitate the transition into a four-year baccalaureate program and beyond.

Due to the need of interaction with students employees and college community this position requires in-person presence. This position is eligible for telework however positions with back-up duties require consistent on-site presence; telework may be available to certain roles on a limited basis to best meet the needs of the department.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Provide individual academic advising sessions to degree and non-degree seeking students that are included on the list of designated advisees.
  • Provide follow-up advising sessions with designated advisees to ensure that students register in a timely manner for each semester.
  • Serve as the primary advisor for Veteran students.
  • Communicate academic standards and policies to students to assist them in a proactive manner throughout their enrollment.
  • Facilitate workshops on student success related topics
  • Collaborations with representatives from the credit faculty and continuing education to ensure that a current knowledge base of program requirements and changes is maintained.
  • Advance the Colleges Completion efforts by assisting students to identify a clear pathway to graduation transfer and subsequent employment.
  • Provide advisee follow-up in response to faculty feedback provided through the Academic Monitoring system.
  • Provide routine coverage in the advising area to assist students in meeting their educational transfer and career goals. This includes evening hour coverage.
  • Participate and support annual programs that serve the advising needs of students to include student orientation open houses information nights college visits and retention workshops.
  • Access student information using the Colleges Enterprise Resource Planning ERP) software. Participate in training sessions related to the Colleges ERP software.
  • Maintain advising files on student advisees.
  • Attend advising staff meetings and work on divisional projects as necessary.
  • OTHER RELATED DUTIES:
  • Participates on internal and external committees as requested.
  • Handles other related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education: MA/MS preferred in psychology education sociology or related field.
  • Experience: Three years experience working in an educational environment. Preference will be given to individuals who have worked in a college setting with advising experience.
  • Skills/Training: Professional experiences should reflect responsibilities associated with the management of tasks projects and special assignments. The position requirements include the ability to coordinate multiple administrative tasks and assist students individually simultaneously. Additionally evidence of the ability to interpret academic policy and procedures is needed.
  • Proficiencies: Evidence of strong verbal and written communication skills; organizational and accuracy skills are a must. Experience working with software applications such as Word Excel Access Teams and an integrated student information system.
  • Scheduling: Varied work schedule during critical periods sometimes requiring evening Saturday and Sunday work hours dependent on the needs of special events. This position includes rotating evening coverage.
  • Other Requirements: Requires ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and handle high volumes of student advising demands.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

This position classifies the physical exertion requirements as sedentary work involving lifting no more than 10 pounds at a time and occasionally lifting or carrying articles like docket files ledgers and small tools. Although a sedentary job is defined as one which involves sitting a certain amount of walking and standing is often necessary in carrying out job duties. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required occasionally and other sedentary criteria are met.

This is a exempt (salaried) non overtime eligible position; Grade 115(pay scale: $). The salary for the position based on budget is $61000-$63000. Applicants initial salary placement is based on internal equity and relevant candidate experience.

Based upon the budgeted hours of a position contribution to the Maryland State Retirement Pension System may be required.
