About Type One Energy
Type One Energy Group is mission-driven to provide sustainable affordable fusion power to the world. Established in 2019 and venture-backed in 2023 the company is led by a team of globally recognized fusion scientists with a strong track record of building state-of-the-art stellarator fusion machines together with veteran business leaders experienced in scaling companies and commercializing energy technologies
If you are searching for the best new ideas and share our vision join us as a Model Based Systems and Simulation Engineer. This is what you need to know:
Location: Knoxville TN
Salary: Highly Competitive Plus Benefits
Contract: Permanent full time
Reporting to: Chief Technology Officer
Your role in the mission:
Type One Energy is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Model Based Systems and Simulation Engineer to join our team working on the exciting development of a next-generation stellarator fusion energy plant. This role is critical to our mission of creating a cost-effective and commercially viable fusion energy solution.
You will be instrumental in developing and maintaining comprehensive digital design tools for our stellarator plant including a system design model. These tools will serve as a central platform for understanding plant behavior exploring design trade-offs identifying key cost drivers and ultimately optimizing plant design for minimal cost while maintaining performance and safety.
You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of physicists and engineers to ensure the team has full visibility into the complex interactions within the stellarator system and its subsystems. The effort will be guided by our Senior Integrated Plant Modeling Engineer.
You will develop and maintain system models creating and maintaining a detailed multi-domain system model of the stellarator plant using Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodologies and tools (e.g. SysML Cameo Systems Modeler MDAO frameworks PROCESS Bluemira etc.).
You will be responsible for the Integration and further development of plant models including but not limited to:
Physics Systems:Magnetic confinement heating and current drive diagnostics.
Engineering Systems:Vacuum vessel magnets (superconducting and normal conducting) cryogenics power systems cooling systems tritium breeding and handling remote handling.
Plant Support Systems:Buildings infrastructure safety systems control systems.
Utilize integrated plant models to investigate the impact of individual components on overall plant performance from a RAMI perspective.
Integrate cost models and economic analysis into the system model to understand cost drivers and perform trade studies.
You will also be responsible for:
Developing and Maintaining integrated systems codes in Python or equivalent.
Ensure model consistency traceability and adherence to MBSE best practices.
Document model architecture assumptions and validation results.
Utilize the system models to explore different plant architectures and design options.
Conduct trade studies and sensitivity analyses to evaluate the impact of design choices on performance cost and risk.
Support the development of system and subsystem specifications based on model insights.
Use the model to support risk assessment and mitigation strategies.
Work closely with the finance team to integrate cost models into the systems model to understand cost trade-offs.
Work closely with physicists engineers business teams to gather input validate models and communicate results.
Present model findings and recommendations to technical and management audiences and participate in design reviews.
What youll need:
Bachelors or Masters degree in Nuclear Engineering Systems Engineering Mechanical Engineering Industrial Engineering or a related engineering/scientific discipline.
Minimum 10 years of experience in the design stage of complex projects exploring design trade-offs.
Proven experience in developing and applying system models for complex engineering systems.
Experience with integration between engineering modeling and simulation tools either with custom solutions or commercial tools such as Phoenix ModelCenter or SIMULIA Process Composer.
Basic programming or scripting skills (e.g. Python MATLAB) for model automation and data analysis.
Skills with transforming between different data representations and formats (e.g. property graphs different geometry formats) highly preferred.
Experience with simulation and analysis tools relevant to complex systems (e.g. MATLAB/Simulink Python Modelica etc.).
Experience with Fusion Specific tools (e.g. Process Bluemira) preferred but not required.
Experience with cost modeling and analysis is preferred but not required.
