Working 18.25 hours per week

An opportunity has arisen to recruit to a permanent part-time position at 18.25 hours per week within Reader Services at the Library of Birmingham. We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague with excellent customer skills to join the team working in a busy frontline library service.

Reader Services offer a range of facilities and materials that support formal and informal learning in addition to reading for leisure and pleasure. The service encompasses adult fiction and non-fiction on the busy lending terraces together with subject information collections public computers and study spaces on levels 2 and 3 of the Library of Birmingham.

The team also has a city-wide role in:

  • Managing electronic resources such as e-audio books downloaded e-books e-magazines online newspapers and e-comics/graphic novels.
  • Supporting in-person Reading Groups.
  • Stock selection of resources languages other than English
  • Bibliographic functions and procurement

The position is graded at GR3 Senior Library Assistant. You would be supporting the service manager and providing supervision for the frontline service to deliver a wide range of library services to the public including:

  • Enquiry & information service.
  • Circulation functions and reservation fulfilment.
  • Legacy (stack) collection requests
  • Computing & printing/copying/scanning services
  • Study spaces including bookable rooms

In addition you will be involved with:

  • Stock curation selection maintenance and weeding (discarding)
  • Creating promotional material and organising events
  • Cash management and till consolidation
  • Advance scheduling and arranging the day-to-day tasks & duties of the team

The roles working patterns includes alternate Saturdays and one evening per week up until 19:15.
