We are looking for a compassionate and reliable Peer Support Specialist to provide guidance mentorship and support to individuals navigating behavioral health challenges. This role uses lived experience to build trust foster resilience and promote recovery-focused goals.
The Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority (JPHSA) Executive Administrative department oversees a variety of clinical and support programs that cross two or more service area divisions as well as involves parish wide programming. The incumbent will serve as a peer providing Peer Support services in the Family Preservation Court program (FPC). Incumbent reports to the Mental Health Program Director-B.

Minimum Qualifications
Three years of social services experience; OR
Six years of full-time experience in any field; OR
A bachelors degree.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Positions that provide addictive disorder counseling or prevention services will require certification or eligibility for certification issued by the Addictive Disorder Regulatory Authority (ADRA) or its successor.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
As a Social Service Counselor you will
- Provides peer supports in the community to individuals and their families in the FPC program.
- Peer Services is defined as:
- Engagement
- Screening brief intervention and referral to treatment. Contractor will make every effort to connect 75% of all referrals to treatment within ten (10) days of contact
- Education to service recipients and family members on mental illness substance use disorders and recovery
- Assistance with transition from treatment to the community
- Assistance with implementation of community supports
- Assistance with planned discharges and connection to resources
- Follow-up post discharge from services to include peer services and all referred services.
- Provision of advocacy individualized support and problem-solving
- Assistance with helping service recipients obtain necessities of daily living
- Promotion of self-advocacy skills
- Participates in weekly FPC staffings
- Coordinates treatment services with other members of the FPC team at the direction of the FPC Treatment team lead (MHPD-B)
- Advocates for service recipients in staffings to other members of the FPC as needed
- Provides education to FPC team about peer services
- Attends bi-weekly FPC hearings

Appointment Type: Probational Promotional or Job Appointment
Career Progression: This position participates in a Career Progression Group and can be filled as a Social Service Counselor 1 2 or 3.
Work Schedule:Flexible work hours that may be outside of the traditional 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Monday-Friday dependent on job duties.
Compensation:The salary offered will be determined based on qualifications and experience.
