Position Description

NYU Madrid is seeking a local part-time instructor to teach the course Expressive Culture: Film sponsored by the College Core Curriculum of NYUs College of Arts and Science. The course will run during the Fall and Spring semesters beginning in Spring 2026 (January 19-May 12).

The course is taught in English. Candidates must be legally able to work in Spain at the time of application.

Expressive Culture

In Expressive Culture students explore the complexities of artistic expression in various media: sounds images words performance or film. Each course introduces requisite historical formal and critical vocabularies; examines fundamental issues associated with interpretation of the arts making use of these media; and investigates the complex relations between artistic activity and other facets of social organization. The courses also make use whenever possible of the rich cultural resources of the city.

Course Description: Expressive Culture: Film

Film is a medium that combines a number of arts. It lies at the intersection of art and technology and of art and mass culture and at the boundaries of the national and the global. Film is also a medium that coincides with and contributes to the invention of modern life. By exploring the expressive and representational achievements of cinema in the context of modernity and mass culture students learn the concepts to grasp the different ways in which films create meaning achieve their emotional impact and respond in complex ways to the historical contexts in which they are made. Taught in Madrid this course foregrounds Spanish cinema a rich body of work spanning over a century. It also incorporates visits to sites in Madrid that illuminate different aspects of historical and contemporary Spanish film culture.

The lecturer should hold a Ph.D. in a field such as Cultural Studies Film Studies Literature or another related field. Experience as a student or teaching in a U.S. college or university is preferred. Candidates must be legally able to work in Spain at the time of application.
