GENERAL PURPOSE

Supports the water department by performing a variety of un-skilled to semi-skilled work in maintaining the citys water systems. Provides support to water department projects and direction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Reads and analyzes water meters throughout the City using the automated meter reading system. Reports back information as needed.
  • Inspects meters and helps determine the performance of the meter and if additional actions are needed.
  • Installs new meters and repairs current meters throughout the city including meter replacement.
  • Completes work orders and various other records pertaining to work activities.
  • Tracking time and materials for tasks and projects.
  • Provides information to residents as needed. Refer more difficult situations to the supervisor.
  • Coordinates meter problems between the supervisor and utility billing to resolve issues and makes recommendations as needed.
  • Disconnects or reconnects customer water service in accordance with City ordinances and policies. Communicates the situation to residents and defuses situations as needed. Communicates with tact and skill when dealing with the public.
  • Assists in security checks of water systems and facilities. Reports any issues or problems and recommends solutions.
  • Performs installation cleaning maintenance and repairs on all components of City water systems.
  • Monitors water lines for excavations leaks breaks or other situations which pose a threat to the water lines mains and services. Provides reports and feedback to appropriate individuals along with recommendations.
  • Observes and participates in work zone safety procedures and follows safety principles when operating vehicles and equipment. Follows applicable OSHA and safety requirements.
  • Operates cleans and maintains tools vehicles and equipment to assure proper working order.
  • Communicates with other departments for instructions and directions. Follow verbal and written instructions and communications from supervisor.
  • Responds to customer concerns to gather appropriate information and insight.
  • Participates in City snow removal on call rotation for City properties.
  • Available for 24-hour emergency response.
  • Will be scheduled with water on call rotation.
  • May perform Blue Stake markings of City Owned Utilities.
  • Performs other duties as needed or assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience:

  • 1 Year experience in water works equipment operation construction or closely related area.

OR

  • Equivalent knowledge and skills to perform job duties.

Certifications/Licenses:

  • Must become a certified Utah State Water Distribution Operator (Grade 1 minimum) within one year of hire.
  • Must obtain a class A CDL Drivers License within 12 months of hire.

Additional Requirements:

  • Must be at least 18yrs old.
  • Requires a valid Utah Drivers License.
  • Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug test background check and driving record check

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Water technician experience.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the policies procedures equipment and materials required for effective water system related operations maintenance and repairs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing in English.

TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USED

  • May use motorized vehicles light and heavy equipment and hand tools.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Tasks require a variety of physical activities generally involving muscular strain such as walking standing stooping sitting kneeling and reaching. Talking hearing and seeing are essential to performing required job functions.
  • The employee works near moving mechanical parts and heavy equipment and is occasionally exposed to wet and/ or humid conditions confined spaces fumes or airborne particles toxic or caustic chemicals.
  • Common eye hand finger dexterity must exist. Mental application utilizes memory for details verbal instructions emotional stability and discriminating thinking.
  • Daily exposure to weather extremes and seasonal conditions.
  • Daily local travel is required in normal course of job performance.
  • Must be able to lift 100 lbs.
  • Must be in general good condition for digging and lifting.
