Position Summary:
Financial Counselor navigates patients through the financial assistance process as indicated in the Endeavor Financial Assistance Policy to ensure cases are financially cleared and secure funding for outstanding accounts. Counselor will ensure patient understanding of revenue cycle expectations and financial liability/responsibility by providing information on Financial Assistance Policy resources and cost of services. The counselor will assess their ability to pay for inpatient outpatient and ancillary services on future and existing outstanding accounts and find identify appropriate financial assistance options utilizing federal state and private resources to settle/resolve accounts. Counselor will work with patient to negotiate payment plans while collaborating with Medical Group Practices community health resources and revenue cycle teams to ensure patient financial transparency. Counselor reflects the mission vision and values of Endeavor Health adheres to the organizations Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program and complies with all relevant policies procedures guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards
What you will do:
- Providing estimates of financial responsibility for inpatient outpatient and ancillary procedures as requested or required in compliance with No Surprise Act and Fair Patient Billing Act standards. Maintains patient confidentiality per HIPAA regulations. Is knowledgeable of current contracted and non-contracted healthcare insurance plans. Follows through and makes corrections in demographics and insurances as they are discovered.
- Assist with determining options for resolving financial responsibility including referring to Medicaid vendors for assessment of qualification for Medicaid coverage.
- Obtains required financial information from the patient including identification of payment/funding sources through interviewing patient family or representatives as indicated in Financial Assistance Policy.
- Provide patients with essential financial information and assistance related to their healthcare to evaluate accounts for eligibility for assistance as indicated in the Financial Assistance Policy.
- Maintains clear and professional communication with patients families care team and internal departments to gather and verify essential patient information. This includes demographic insurance financial and clinical data necessary for efficient and timely processing of patient accounts and payment. Responds to telephone inquiries monitor and respond timely to all electronic communication. Uses effective service recovery skills to solve problems or service breakdowns when they occur. Provides ideas and suggestions for process improvements within the department. Proactively analyzes account activity identifies problems and initiates appropriate actions/resolutions.
- Documents all actions taken in the appropriate software applications. Verifies insurance eligibility and benefit levels through the use of online tools (Real Time Eligibility tools like NEBO or RTE OneSource.) or over the phone as necessary. Manage patient and account work queues to resolve outstanding accounts utilizing approved workflows including but not limited to patient communication follow up third party follow up and payer follow up
What you will need:
- Education: Bachelors Degree or 10 years of applicable experience required
- Experience: Minimum of 5 years experience in patient care setting with expert knowledge of billing and insurance particularly in regard to Oncology
Technical Skills:
- Accurately document patient information and procedures
- Navigate multiple software systems effectively (EPIC PassPort)
- Proficiency in using fax machines copiers scanners and printers
- Proficiency with Outlook Excel and Word
Communication Skills:
- Effectively communicate and negotiate with diverse population including patients families physicians and staff in person and on the phone and electronically (email/MyChart)
- Clear and concise verbal communication skills to interview patients and explain billing matters patient financial responsibility and payment options
- Project a professional empathetic and concierge style approach in all interactions
Problem Solving/Analytical
- Analyze patient billing information and identify discrepancies
- Resolve issues related to billing collections and patient accounts
- Detail oriented especially when analyzing documents and processing financial transactions
