Within ORES the Biosafety Office staff and programs are essential to the operational backbone of the universitys research involving biological materials and compliance with the Federal Select Agent Program.

HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

The essential duties and responsibilities of the Senior Biosafety Specialist are the following:

  • Biosafety Protocol Review:
    Reviews and assesses research protocols involving the use of biological materials animals laboratory operations and facilities and construction/renovation plans for all aspects of biosafety to ensure appropriate health and safety controls containment and compliance with NIH CDC USDA and other federal state local and University requirements; provide feedback and assist Principal Investigators regarding research involving biological materials. Participates in the activities of the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC).
  • Training Tracking/Development:
    Oversees assignment and tracking and assists with the development and presentation of biological safety training and educational programs.
  • Biological Waste and Transport:
    Manages and implements biomedical waste disposal and associated record keeping. Ensures biohazardous materials are packaged labeled stored transported and disposed of properly.
  • Technical Reports/Laboratory Assessments:

Prepares technical reports and outcome measurements as directed to include the organization entry and analysis of information and data obtained from research proposals laboratory and research facilities assessments and faculty and staff surveys.

  • Laboratory Equipment Certification:

Assists with the certification and testing of laboratory safety equipment (i.e. biosafety cabinets safety showers eye wash stations).

  • Incidents/Accidents:
    Responds to laboratory and research facility emergencies involving biological materials.

Minimum Hiring Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Microbiology Biology Public Health or related field and three years of related experience.

  • Must be able to wear and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

  • Must be able to pass US Department of Justice security clearance.

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree preferred.

  • Experience in an academic setting preferred.

  • Training or the ability to complete training in HAZWOPER (40 hours) within the first 6 months of hire.
