Emergency Medicine Telehealth Fellowship

The Emergency Medicine Telehealth Fellowship is a one-year advanced training program with an optional second year dedicated to pursuing a Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master of Health Administration (MHA) designed to prepare the next generation of physician leaders to transform emergency care through digital innovation strategic leadership and systems level change.

The fellowship integrates administration research and education to equip fellows with the knowledge skills and experience to reimagine emergency medicine in a rapidly evolving healthcare landscape. By leveraging telehealth and emerging digital technologies fellows will learn to extend the reach of emergency medicine beyond the walls of the ED addressing common patient care barriers improving access and enhancing the quality safety and experience of care.

Through immersive hands-on leadership experiences fellows will become proficient in implementing scalable telehealth solutions that improve operational efficiency expand clinical access and advance health system innovation.

Program Overview

Administration & Leadership

The fellow will serve as a VPIT (Virtual Provider in Triage) Operations Director acquiring advanced leadership experience in the coordination management and continuous optimization of a telehealth service spanning multiple operationally diverse emergency department addition they will actively contribute to the operational oversight of the Virtual Urgent Care and SCDC Virtual Emergency Triage services.

Capstone Project

Each fellow will design and launch a new telehealth service from concept to implementation. This project includes service design workflow development pro forma creation stakeholder engagement and executive level pitching providing practical experience in leading digital transformation within a complex healthcare system.

Research & Innovation

The fellowship empowers fellows to lead impactful scholarly work that drives the digital transformation of emergency medicine. Through these projects fellows will learn how to translate data driven insights into operational and clinical improvements that advance telehealth innovation. Each fellow is expected to present their work at two conferences one regional and one national and is encouraged to publish in peer reviewed journals.

Education & Training

The fellow will serve as the lead instructor for the Emergency Medicine Telehealth Elective (EMED872) a two-week rotation for fourth year medical students and interprofessional learners. Each block includes two to four students. The fellow oversees all aspects of their experience including orientation teaching sessions clinical observation and mentorship. This ensures a high-quality engaging and collaborative learning environment that promotes understanding and acceptance of telehealth and digital technologies with the goal of adoption and integration into their future practice.

In addition fellows will host quarterly Journal Club and Strategic Workgroup sessions creating opportunities for interdisciplinary discussion scholarly collaboration and strategic planning around telehealth operations innovation and future program development.

Program Outcome

Graduates will emerge as forward-thinking physician leaders equipped to design implement and scale telehealth solutions that improve accessibility efficiency and quality of care while shaping the future of emergency medicine through innovation education and systems leadership. The optional second year offers fellows the opportunity to expand their impact through formal administrative training earning an MBA or MHA to complement their telehealth and operational leadership experience positioning them for systemwide or executive level roles in healthcare innovation.

Clinical Responsibilities

Fellows will be required to provide hands-on clinical care at both Emergency Departments at MUSC. EMTH fellows are expected to provide a total of 752 clinical hours per year with the possibility to moonlight above these required hours if other fellowship requirements are met.

Licensures Registrations and Certifications

Candidate must be a graduate of an ACGME-accredited Emergency Medicine residency and be board-certified or board-eligible. A South Carolina medical license and hospital credentialing are required prior to the start date of the EMTH Fellowship.
