JOB SUMMARY
The Senior Manager of Environmental Literacy and Outdoor Education is responsible for the strategic leadership planning and oversight of all environmental literacy and outdoor education programs across Anne Arundel County Public Schools and multiple non-AACPS sites. This role ensures compliance with Maryland State Department of Education standards and COMAR regulations manages operations at multiple facilities and develops innovative programming supported by both operational and grant funding. The Senior Manager collaborates with district and school leaders staff and external partners to advance environmental literacy foster student engagement and secure sustainable resources for program growth.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides systemwide leadership in the implementation of environmental literacy standards and compliance with COMAR regulations across all grade levels.
  • Oversees daily operations safety and maintenance of environmental literacy and outdoor education facilities ensuring effective use of resources and long-term sustainability both at Arlington Echo and across partner sites while planning for long term program success and sustainability.
  • Supervises supports and evaluates professional staff across multiple sites building capacity and fostering a culture of innovation and accountability
  • Designs implements and evaluates instructional programs curricula and professional learning aligned with district goals and state requirements.
  • Develops and manages programming funded through both operational and grant sources including writing proposals implementing initiatives and monitoring impact.
  • Collaborates with principals district leaders and instructional staff to integrate environmental literacy into the broader PreK12 curriculum.
  • Serves as a primary liaison with local state and national agencies and organizations to secure resources partnerships and advocacy for environmental literacy.
  • Directs program scheduling and logistics of day and overnight programs including food services and transportation needs to support student participation. Coordinates scheduling and utilization of off-site facilities and partnership programing.
  • Manages departmental budgets analyze funding needs and ensure compliance with fiscal and reporting requirements
  • Leads outreach efforts with families community groups and stakeholders to build awareness strengthen support and promote program outcomes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Bachelors Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required.
  • Masters Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university preferred.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge skills and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the employee to successfully perform the duties of the position.

Experience

  • Seven (7) years professional or successful teaching experience required; and
  • Five (5) years management experience required.

Knowledge Skills Abilities and Other Characteristics

  • Knowledge of educational principles and best practices in teaching techniques for environmental/outdoor education and environmental literacy. Knowledge of science and current science research.
  • Familiarity with camp orientation and maintenance and activities geared towards students who may not be accustomed to the outdoor environment.
  • Experience as a policy leader and/or advocacy of environmental issues; experience with grant writing.
  • Knowledge of current trends and research in eliminating the achievement gaps data analysis instructional pedagogy assessment building teacher capacity leadership and professional development delivery options.
  • Knowledge of school organization administration and supervision.
  • Ability to enforce standards related to safety and cleanliness.
  • Ability to lead and supervise direct and indirect staff and volunteers across multiple sites fostering collaboration and accountability.
  • Ability to create a positive environment that values respects and leverages all employee talents while providing fair advancement for all employees.
  • Oral and written communication skills that demonstrate a professional demeanor across all stakeholder groups.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with business software (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing Microsoft Office Suite-Word Excel Outlook and/or PowerPoint preferred).

Licenses and Certifications
Employee must retain active licenses certifications and enrollment as a condition of employment.

  • Hold or be eligible for Educator License: Advanced Professional License (APL) issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required; or
  • Hold or be eligible for Educator License: Administrator I Certificate issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.
  • Hold or be eligible for Drivers License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and
  • Daily access to reliable transportation.

Driving Requirements

  • Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.
