Alfred Health is a leader in health care delivery improvement research and education. We are the main provider of health services to people living in the inner southeast suburbs of Melbourne from ambulatory to inpatient and home and community-based services. On 1 January 2026 Alfred Health will come together with Kooweerup Regional Health Service Peninsula Health Bass Coast Health and Gippsland Southern Health Service to create Bayside Health a newly merged health service with more than 22000 employees caring for a community of over 1.2 million Victorians. The new health service will provide people with the best possible care with services that support them throughout their lives. The merger will also strengthen our workforce providing new training education and career opportunities. Subject to final approval on 1 January 2026 all employees from the five health services will transfer to Bayside Health.

Department

The Department of Gastroenterology is a clinical service at Alfred Health and an academic Department of the Central Clinical School of Monash University. It runs a wide-ranging clinical service across all aspects of gastroenterology. It is responsible for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with suspected or established gastrointestinal and liver disease including the appropriate utilisation of diagnostic and therapeutic gastrointestinal endoscopy. Clientele include inpatients admitted electively or via the Emergency Department directly to the Gastroenterology Unit or referred for investigation and management from other Units within The Alfred.

About the Role

Applications are invited for the position of Head of Endoscopy at Alfred Health to work at least 0.6EFT. The Head of Endoscopy reports to the Director of Gastroenterology.

Qualifications and Experience:

Our preferred candidate must possess the following experience and attributes:

  • Appointees must be legally qualified medical practitioners registered or registrable with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) without conditions undertakings or reprimands that could impact on their clinical practice.
  • Fellowship of the relevant college(s).
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strong clinical leadership within an Endoscopy/Gastroenterology service including fostering a culture of integrity fairness and accountability.
  • Proven track record in managing resources budgets and service delivery targets with experience leading audits and ensuring compliance with hospital guidelines and policies.
  • Experience in strategic service planning and delivery including developing services in line with organisational priorities introducing new technologies and expanding procedural capacity.
  • Advanced clinical expertise in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy maintaining contemporary best practice.
  • Demonstrated substantial experience as an Interventional Endoscopist
  • Demonstrated commitment to clinical governance quality safety and risk management including participation in morbidity and mortality reviews accreditation programs and compliance with national standards.
  • Meets Alfred Health requirements for credentialing and scope of practice in Gastroenterology and Endoscopy.
  • Evidence of contribution to education training and supervision of junior medical staff registrars and fellows as well as fostering research opportunities within the department. Candidates with a research higher degree or research track record would be preferred.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines resolve issues constructively and represent the Unit in internal and external forums.
