About the PositionPerform skilled locksmith work involving the repair installation and construction of locks and locking systems. Responsibilities include fabricating keys and electronic access devices. This position requires journey-level expertise in maintaining and installing a variety of locking mechanisms and access control systems.

Skilled Locksmith Work

Tasks include:

  • Make and issue keys/electronic access required for students and staff in their use of offices laboratories and other facilities throughout the campus.
  • Re-key/reprogram locks to improve building security.
  • Inspect key and locking systems for buildings change combinations of safes and vaults and perform emergency keying and opening services on locks and safes.
  • Operate key duplicating machines drill press grinders and other power and hand tools required for accomplishing work.
  • Install service and maintain mechanical and electronic lock systems hardwired wireless and stand-alone.
  • Straighten repair install and otherwise service locking and non-locking devices; maintain and repair doors panic and exit devices latch plates door closures other door related hardware including but not limited to key card systems and electromagnetic systems.
  • May instruct semi-skilled workers. Actively participate in meetings and training as scheduled.
  • Provide excellent customer service through effective courteous and professional interactions with clients colleagues and the campus community.
  • Respond to after-hours callouts to address key lock and electronic access issues.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Administrative Work

Tasks include:

  • Maintain records of key/electronic access assignments and locks for buildings on campus.
  • Perform administrative duties such as alphabetizing and filing answering phones and providing customer service.
  • Assist in maintenance of master key system.
Required Qualifications
  • Three years full-time work experience as a locksmith or equivalent education/experience.
  • Experience with maintaining and using hand and power tools safely as required for the trade (lock picks drills wood chisels metal grinders key duplicating machines drill press grinders and other power and hand tools required for accomplishing work.
  • Ability to read and understand written information and instructions.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with software applications for spreadsheets word processing and email.
  • Experience working in sensitive situations such as: operational offices classrooms dorm rooms rest rooms etc.
  • Valid drivers license or the ability to obtain one prior to starting work in order to drive a state-owned vehicle for travel to work locations.
  • Ability to perform daily work tasks independently under limited supervision.
  • Possess technical accuracy and recordkeeping skills.
  • Ability to work with computer hardware and software required to track work orders and record time worked.
  • Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills and ability to work in a friendly and cooperative manner with students staff and faculty at all levels of the organization and in contacts with the public.
  • Ability to manage time well and work under pressure situations with tight schedules and deadlines to complete projects.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge and experience with programming electronic access control software and associated hardware.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable Washington Administrative Code (WAC) regulations and local building codes.
  • Strong knowledge of Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act (WISHA) Occupational Safety and Health Agency (OSHA) rules and regulations standard job safety rules.

Salary$4449 - $5161/month depending on qualifications and experience
