General Assignment Reporter - Education Focus

Location: Edwardsville IL

Schedule: MondayFriday (occasional evenings or weekends as needed)

The Edwardsville Intelligencer is seeking a motivated community-minded journalist to join our newsroom as a general assignment reporter with an emphasis on education and local schools coverage.

This position offers the best of both worlds a primary focus on the people policies and stories shaping education in the Edwardsville area while also contributing to daily coverage of local news events and features that matter to readers across the community.

What Youll Do

• Report on local schools including Edwardsville Community Unit School District 7 private schools and higher education.
  
  

• Cover school board meetings community events and breaking news as needed.
  
  
• Write feature and enterprise stories that show how education connects to broader community issues such as growth infrastructure and equity.
  
  
• Develop sources among educators students parents and local leaders.
  
  
• Collaborate with editors and other reporters to cover the full range of community topics from city hall and development to human-interest stories.
  
  

• Produce timely accurate and engaging stories for both print and digital audiences.
  
  

What Were Looking For

• Bachelors degree in journalism communications or related field (or equivalent experience).
  
  

• Strong reporting and writing skills with attention to accuracy and detail.
  
  
• Ability to balance quick-turn daily stories with deeper enterprise pieces.
  
  
• Knowledge of AP Style and digital-first reporting.
  
  
• Photo and multimedia skills a plus.
  
  

• Willingness to relocate to or live near the Edwardsville/Glen Carbon area.

In accordance with applicable law Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired inthe state of Illinois. The reasonable estimate if hired in Illinois is $32760 to 35360. Please note this information is specific to those hired in this role is open to candidates outside of Illinois the salary range would be aligned to that specific location. A final decision on the successful candidates starting salary will be based on a number of permissible non-discriminatory factors including but not limited to skills and experience training certifications and education.
