The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seekinga Transportation Engineer 3 to join the Olympic Region Traffic Office where they will lead and manage complex traffic engineering projects that enhance the safety efficiency and reliability of Washingtons transportation system. This role is responsible for overseeing a team of engineers and providing technical expertise in signing illumination work zone traffic control traffic signals and intelligent transportation systems. The ideal candidate will ensure all projects meet WSDOTs rigorous standards for quality safety and compliance while supporting the agencys long-term strategic goals. What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role theTransportation Engineer 3 will:
- Manage complex traffic design projects involving signals illumination signing work zone traffic control and intelligent transportation systems (ITS).
- Develop scopes of work project budgets schedules and person-hour estimates while monitoring progress to ensure projects stay on track and within budget.
- Prepare and review traffic design plans estimates specifications special provisions and supporting documentation for project delivery.
- Apply sound engineering judgment to analyze data identify issues and develop practical solutions to improve design practices and policies.
- Supervise and develop a traffic design team by assigning work providing coaching and training conducting evaluations and ensuring adherence to safety policies.
- Coordinate with internal offices external agencies and partners to resolve design and construction issues and ensure effective communication across disciplines.
- Conduct on-site field reviews to verify compliance with plans and specifications document findings and provide recommendations or corrective actions as needed.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:
- Engineering Knowledge: Proficient understanding of engineering principles methods and practices as they relate to project design and delivery of highway construction projects
- Leadership & Team Development:Demonstrated ability to lead and supervise a design team build and maintain an effective team and coach mentor and train new team members in a hybrid work environment.
- Project & Resource Management:Skilled in project management practices to plan schedule and deliver multiple projects for various stakeholders such a project offices construction offices and maintenance.
- Construction & Contract Administration:Knowledge of preparing construction contract language including interpreting standard specifications and writing general special provisions
- Technical Review & Analysis:Skilled in reviewing and interpreting contract provisions plans drawings prepared by developers consultants and other agencies and for compliance with standards.
- Problem Solving & Innovation:Ability to examine develop and propose alternate solutions to complex project elements.
- Communication & Collaboration:Communicates technical and non-technical information clearly and professionally to diverse audiences both virtually and in person using multiple communication platforms.
- Technology Proficiency:Proficient in utilizing computer-aided drafting word processing and spreadsheet applications to complete and check engineering work efficiently.
- Independent & Team Work:Demonstrated ability to manage workload while working independently or collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
- Culture of Respect and Belonging:Builds a respectful work environment that develops and maximizes the teams talents to deliver projects and creates a culture of belonging and personal growth.
In addition to the above the following is also required:
- A valid drivers license and the ability to operate a state-owned vehicle.
- Ability to transport move and manipulate various types of equipment used to measure and document field conditions. Equipment may include measuring wheels bundles of stakes levels tripods and hand tools.
- Ability to traverse rough steep and uneven terrain while adhering to WSDOT safety practices.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Traffic Engineering Expertise: Applies traffic engineering principles in one or more areas such as freeway operations traffic operations traffic design work zone traffic control traffic analysis or safety analysis.
- Professional Engineering Credentials: Holds an Engineering in Training (EIT) certificate or a Professional Engineer (PE) license.
- WSDOT Standards Knowledge: Knowledge of WSDOT design policies standards and practices relevant to traffic engineering and project delivery.
- Design & Software Proficiency: Knowledge of computer-aided design and civil engineering software to prepare and review technical plans and designs.
- Traffic Modeling Experience: Demonstrated experience with traffic modeling applications to determine the impacts from construction activities on the traveling public.

- Field work is conducted outdoors in all weather conditions during both day and night and often requires navigating rough or uneven terrain. The work involves standing for long periods working at or near ground level and handling or transporting field equipment. Employees may be exposed to typical highway and construction-related hazards such as severe weather noise poor air quality high-speed traffic heavy machinery chemicals and nearby bodies of water as well as potential exposure to sanitary waste.
