Job Summary

The Southern Desert Regional Police Academy (SDRPA) was established in 2003 and is currently located at the Waters Street Facility in Henderson NV. CSN serves as the fiscal and logistical agent for the SDRPA. The CSN Academic Director (a Professional at-will employee) serves under the administrative direction of the CSN Dean of Business Hospitality and Public Services. The Academic Director serves as the academic liaison and coordinator between the college and SDRPA Commander and leadership. The CSN Academic Director is responsible for supporting the LETA Commander with advice related to training support infrastructure and academic curriculum responsive to the needs of the public safety agencies within the region. They assist the Commander to maintain academic rigor in compliance with the colleges accrediting agencies and CSN Criminal Justice Program. The Academic Director works collaboratively with the LETA Commander to review and monitor appropriate P.O.S.T and CSN Criminal Justice academic standards including oversight of assessment of cadet learning.

Leadership and Management:

  • Works closely with assigned academy instructors CRJ Instructional Faculty and staff to provide guidance and support in appropriate instructional methodologies.
  • Works with the Academy Commander and CSN Department Chair to develop and implement training schedules curricula and instructional materials to ensure a superior training program.

Community and Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Promotes collaborative educational partnerships between CSN and the LETA Commander the SDRPA Executive Board and other internal and external entities.
  • In conjunction with the LETA Commander represents CSN and the academy as requested at college events community meetings and professional conferences.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with college stakeholders partners and agencies.
  • Works closely with the CSN VPAA and the academic Dean to promote the development of the CSN Center of Excellence in Public Safety.
  • Supports the planning and organizing of training program expansion.

Academic Duties

  • Works closely with SDRPA leadership for grading maintaining the Academy Learning Management System and the administration of student learning outcomes assessment.
  • Works with the Academy Commander to oversee the management and security of all tests and the testing bank ensuring it is current and accurate.
  • Assists the Academy Commander in ensuring regulatory compliance with the Nevada Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
  • Ensures the curriculum is aligned to CSN Criminal Justice academic standards and course objective requirements.
  • As a subject matter expert assists the Academy Commander in assessing effective physical learning environments for students.
  • Provides program analysis and participates in strategic and long-range instructional planning.
  • Administers student learning assessment processes in accordance with CSN policy and practice.
  • Formulates and reviews academic evaluation of teaching faculty at the SDRPA.

Training and Development:

  • Reviews and advises the Academy Commander and CSN Department Chair on the design and delivery of advanced training modules for law enforcement techniques legal standards ethics and community relations.
  • Reviews and communicates new developments and innovations in Public Safety Programs.
  • Conducts instructional needs assessments as appropriate. Ensures training programs are up to date with current best practices technological advancements and legal requirements.
  • Assures that all programs services and functions comply with federal state and local codes rules regulations ordinances and CSN policies and procedures. Ensure all training is conducted in an appropriate and safe manner.

Administrative Duties:

  • Assists the Academy Commanders assignment of faculty and assistants to courses monitors schedules and workload for accuracy throughout the semester and assures accurate and timely attendance reporting for all the Southern Desert Regional Academy courses.
  • Prepares and manages academy reports documentation and records related to training activities and trainee performance.
  • Participates in strategic planning and development of academy goals and objectives.
  • Provides input in the development and administration of the SDRPA program annual budget process.
  • Perform other duties as assigned or required.

Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree in criminal justice Criminology JD or other directly related fields from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Five years of demonstrated full-time occupational experience in the criminal justice profession (law enforcement courts or corrections.
  • A minimum of two years full-time equivalent to CRJ teaching experience in a college level educational or training setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing curriculum assessment plans formative and summative assessments assessment instruments conducting analysis of course and program assessment.
  • Knowledge of Nevada P.O.S.T. regulations and college accreditation standards including academy course sequencing mandates and minimum requirements.
  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement training philosophies and instructional requirements.
  • Knowledge of performance monitoring and evaluation techniques.
  • Knowledge of budget planning development and supervision.
  • Knowledge of lesson plan development and training program evaluation.
  • Maintains physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Employment is contingent upon a successful criminal background check.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship (Nevada State does not sponsor employment-related visas).

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD in Criminal Justice Criminology or public administration related field from a regionally accredited college or university.
  • Three years of supervision and management responsibility with a Public Safety agency.
  • Demonstrated teaching experience in a law enforcement academy.
