The Hocken is one of the foremost historical research libraries in New Zealand and global interest in our collections is ever response we are working to ensure greater access and the delivery of a broad client-focussed research service. To realise our vision we have an entry-level opportunity suitable for someone who shares our passion for supporting research focused on Aotearoa New Zealand and the Pacific.

The role Te mahi

General Assistants at the Hocken are critical to the provision of a responsive friendly and professional service to users of the Collections and undertake a variety of tasks such as:

Welcoming visitors to the Hocken and directing their queries to appropriate staff.
Monitoring gallery visitors and the secure use of Hocken materials in reading rooms.
Retrieving and re-shelving materials and assisting in the housing of new acquisitions.
Supporting copying and scanning services
Assisting with collection management including sorting material data entry and basic preventive conservation processes.

We are looking for someone with a strong customer service ethic teamed with excellent communication and presentation skills. You are approachable and have a flexible and adaptable attitude.

Our ideal candidate will also have:
Familiarity with New Zealand and Pacific history and culture.
Competent in the use of computers including familiarity with databases and Microsoft Office.
The ability to work well as part of a diverse team and undertake quality work without direct supervision.
An ability to always work with accuracy.
Commitment to supporting the University of Otagos policies on Te Reo and Tikanga Māori the Treaty of Waitangi and the application of the Universitys Māori Strategic Framework.
Working Knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori.

This is a permanent full-time (37.5 hours) position based in Ōtepoti Dunedin.

This role will work on a roster spanning Tuesday to Saturday each week.

The appointment range for this position is provisionally evaluated at L2 ($57018 to $59354. Top of Range $62472) and is subject to change at any time.

Please note that some physical work is involved including handling collection material and working at height.

You must have the right to live and work in New Zealand to apply for this role.
