JOB SUMMARY:

Responsible for assessing and verifying specimens grossing preparing and staining cytology samples for pathologist read; maintaining all cytology quality control records.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Cytology:

Assist with verifying grossing processing labeling and staining cytology specimens
Log specimens and work on cytology log
Assign proper case type and protocol - slide and cassette inventory in computer
Store and/or discard cytology specimens at end of day
Stain and label all cytology slides received or produced according to current guidelines

End-of-Day Procedures - Cytology and Grossing Area:

Stain and properly label all cytology slides
Place all cellblocks in formalin to be loaded onto the processor with the small tissues
Store residual specimens and clean cytology area and/or grossing bay at end of day

Miscellaneous:

Assist in other areas of histology as training and competency is achieved (embedding staining tagging slides filing blocks logging in received supplies)
Other duties as assigned by the histology manager(s) or lead tech.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor of Science Degree preferred / Associate of science degree with CLIA regulations satisfied.
Some medical lab experience
Must meet CLIA requirements (transcript approval required by Compliance)

Employment Variables:

Works shift as scheduled and must be available to adjust schedule to meet the needs of the department.

Environmental Conditions:

Works with variety of chemicals and reagents as outlined in the MSDS manuals.
Works in a well-lighted cool room.
Machines Tools Equipment and Service Aides: Please list those used.
Uses a variety of office equipment including a copier fax machine printer and computer
Uses a variety of lab equipment including microtomes cryostats stainers processors

Contact with Others:

Interacts with others on a continuous basis. Daily professional interaction with co-workers other team members managers and pathologists is required to complete all required job functions in an efficient manner.

Mental Demands:

High degree of mental alertness required.
Must demonstrate good judgment in establishing priorities that allow for timely and effective accomplishment of varied activities frequently under pressure of time constraints and multiple simultaneous activities.
Excellent customer service skills are essential.
Must recognize problems that need to be referred and make appropriate referrals throughout company escalating to administrative team or CAO as necessary to ensure timely resolution.
Uses independent judgment to perform the majority of duties assigned and is able to solve routine histology problems as they occur.

Working Conditions:

Subject to frequent interruptions and distractions within the work environment.
Contact with Board members referring physicians and staff multiple vendors and internal staff under various circumstances related to corporate activities.

Work Speed:

Routinely works at a moderate pace. The workload is frequently heavy and there are deadlines that must be met.

Working Conditions and Physical Effort:

Work involves exposure to heavy highway traffic driving during inclement weather conditions irregular work schedule.
Moderate physical activity of walking getting in and out of vehicle regularly; requires occasional handling of supplies up to 20-75 pounds.
Driving for extended periods at a time.
Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which require knowledge and practice of basic driving safety precautions and bio-hazard handling.

Other Information:

Reliable transportation is needed to run errands and report to work punctually.
