Every day we get opportunities to make a positive impact on our colleagues partners customers and society. Together were pioneering the solutions of the future and unlocking the full potential of precious resources. Trusted to act on initiative we challenge conventional thinking to develop world-leading technologies that inspire progress in vital areas including energy food water and shipping.
As we push forward the innovative open spirit that fuels our 140-year-old start-up culture and rapid growth also drives our personal growth. So as we shape a more resourceful less wasteful world we build our careers too.
We create better everyday conditions for people. We do this by contributing to a more sustainable future through engineering innovation. We love what we do and were good at it. But now we want to be even better! We are looking for an . thesis student to our Materials Technology and Chemistry department R&D. So what are you going to do today
Alfa Laval is a global company with three key product areas: heat transfer separation and fluid handling. We have sales in more than 100 countries and in 2022 the order intake was about 5 500 million euro. The number of employees is about 20 000. The head office is in Lund Sweden where a major part of the research and development of plate heat exchangers reside.
The Master thesis project
Alfa Laval is a global leader in providing technical equipment essential for heating cooling separating and transporting fluid products. Our products are integral in domestic appliances industrial and food industry applications. One of our largest product groups Gasketed Plate Heat Exchangers (GPHEs) are engineered from pressed plates stacked and separated by rubber gaskets which enable efficient opening closing and sealing. Fouling (accumulation of deposits on the heat transfer surfaces) is very detrimental for the heat exchanger performance leading to loss of thermal performance and an increase in the pressure drop.
The project includes:
Conduct a literature survey on the effect of different process parameters and dairy and plant-based products on fouling on stainless steel surfaces
Select the relevant process parameters to study the fouling and cleaning process
Evaluation of the fouling generated by the different process conditions and raw materials with relevant techniques
Characterize the fouled and cleaned surfaces by for ex. microscopic techniques
Who are you
We are looking for master thesis students with several major courses in chemistry and/or material sciences. We expect you to work independent or in pairs in close cooperation with your mentors at Alfa Laval executing the work on our site in Lund and at the university. You will be part of the Materials & Technology Centre within the R&D BU GPHE.
