JOB SUMMARY
Responsible for management of Universals patent program for its worldwide theme park business. Duties include interfacing with Universal leadership and counsel to coordinate and support filing and prosecution of patents protection of Universals patent portfolio and patent clearance of Universal activities. The Manager will partner with teams across Universals theme park businesses in fostering capturing and protecting innovation and will work with Universal Legal on navigating technology related IP risks and opportunities.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage and direct the drafting filing prosecution and maintenance of U.S. and non-U.S. patents by outside counsel to obtain high quality patents aligned with Universals patent program strategy. Draft patent applications as needed.
- Partner with advanced technology engineering and design groups to develop patent strategies and pursue patents on critical systems/technologies.
- Manage invention harvesting and evaluation processes. Provide patentability analysis and guidance.
- Provide training and guidance to Universal teams regarding Universals patent program and technology-related IP and compliance issues.
- Monitor third party patents and commercial activity that may impact Universal. Support enforcement investigations and actions as needed. Support the review and analysis of Universals commercial activities to support clearance of patent infringement risks as needed.
- Manage Universals patent program docketing to ensure timely filing of applications responses to patent office actions and payment of maintenance fees for Universals patent portfolio.
- Understand and actively participate in Environmental Health & Safety responsibilities by following established UO policy procedures training and team member involvement activities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws.
EDUCATION
Bachelors degree in engineering or other relevant technical area required (Mechanical or Electrical preferred; others considered). J.D. Patent Bar required. Member of a state bar preferred.
EXPERIENCE
4-7 years relevant patent preparation and prosecution experience in a law firm or in-house. Experience at US Patent and Trademark Office will be considered. Engineering experience preferred.
