About the role:

This position will suit a qualified Specialist who will work within St Vincents Hospital Sydney (SVHS)

This incumbent will:

  • Provide Leadership and capacity building to improve medical and nursing responses to violence abuse and neglect within the network (e.g. establishing training and service protocols in Emergency Departments such as for early evidence collection and warm and supported referral through to 24-hour VAN Service crisis responses).

  • Work as a team with a dedicated CNC to provide the above

  • Provide or support other network staff to provide trauma-informed non-acute and follow up health services for victims of violence abuse and neglect responding to relevant health concerns (e.g. sexual health injury treatment follow-up or referral) and supporting health care navigation (e.g. warm referral to primary care or to/from NSW Health VAN Services).

  • Participate in secondary employment as a medical and forensic examiner after hours roster at a NSW Health Local Health District VAN Service.

  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to the criminal justice system and other health services.

  • Develop education and credentialing requirements needed to support the expanded scope of practice for doctors nurses and allied health staff to respond to domestic and family violence.

  • Provide clinical leadership and consultancy on the provision of high quality integrated responses to violence abuse and neglect within SVHNS. This includes providing and supporting the provision of integrated crisis responses (as appropriate for the service context) non-acute clinical care and follow up health care services (e.g. sexual health concerns treatment of related injury and health impacts) and supporting healthcare navigation (e.g. referrals to VAN services relevant clinical specialities and/or primary care) for St Vincents Public Hospital Sydney consistent with the Integrated Prevention and Response to Violence Abuse and Neglect (IPARVAN) Framework.

  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to the criminal justice system and other health services.

  • Participate in the development of medical and forensic crisis responses to domestic and family violence.

Selection Criteria:

  • Personal integrity and demonstrated commitment to the Philosophy Mission and Values of Mary Aikenhead Ministries.

  • The successful applicant will have medical qualification and relevant specialist qualification as per the Staff Specialist Award (e.g. Sexual Health Emergency Medicine Obstetrics/Gynaecology General Practice).

  • Possess or be eligible to possess a specialist registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA);

  • Completed forensic medicine training or be studying towards forensic medicine qualifications within 6 months of commencing in the role:

  • Masters in Forensic Medicine or Graduate Diploma in Forensic Medicine (4 semesters part-time; 8 subjects) Graduate Certificate in Forensic Medicine (2 semesters part-time; 4 relevant subjects) or NSW Health Education Centre Against Violence (ECAV) vocational medical and forensic training including Graduate Certificate in Adult Sexual Assault Forensic Photography and Supervised Medico-Legal.

  • Be studying towards the Education Centre against Violence module: Provide a Medical and Forensic Response to Domestic and Family Violence or equivalent (when available).

  • Demonstrated commitment to teaching at specialty registrar junior medical officer and undergraduate levels;

  • Demonstrated management ability in clinical service planning and the provision of a patient focused comprehensive high quality and cost effective clinical service with knowledge and commitment to the implementation of best practice and clinical service innovation;

  • Demonstrated ability to provide high quality compassionate medical care as evidenced by recent practice experience in working congenially and collaboratively as both a leader and member of a multidisciplinary team and as a provider of services that engender high levels of patient satisfaction and experience
