Vacuum Melt Production Operator Primary Responsibilities
- Work safely.
- Adhere to all company and regulatory EH&S policies and procedures.
- Identify safety issues and notify leadership of all safety concerns.
- Adhere to all Company 6-S initiatives and policies.
- Follow all technical safety quality maintenance and other procedures for the operation of vacuum furnace operations and report any undesirable conditions.
- Operate and maintain furnaces for maximum output.
- Follow production schedules as outlined.
- Visually confirm mold set up matches internal and customer requirements ensure molds are free from all foreign material prior to use.
- Assembly tundish components per internal and customer requirements as outlined in standard work.
- Load mold racks and tundish on conveying systems.
- Verify charge against heat sheet and charge furnace.
- Closes furnace start vacuum pumps and melt down heat following written procedures.
- Monitor melting processing to ensure system is working properly.
- Take temperature reading.
- Pull and prepare samples for metallurgical laboratory analysis.
- Weigh up and add corrective material additions per direction from metallurgical laboratory.
- Leak check furnace and repair all vacuum leaks in furnace or pumping equipment with the help of the Maintenance Department.
- Do all furnace maintenance such as patch line and skull refractory with the aid of fellow operator.
- Assist maintenance department on other furnace maintenance as required.
- Record all melt data accurately in the appropriate prescribed systems / locations.
- Log all materials used in each heat including late adds in the appropriate prescribed systems / locations.
- Report any abnormalities in the furnace or pumping equipment operation to department management.
- Trouble-shoot and assist with repairs.
- Record data on log sheets.
- Record process information and make appropriate entries into GLOVIA.
- Provide input for ordering supplies and tooling.
- Maintain good housekeeping general cleaning sweeping emptying trash hoppers.
- Other duties as assigned by Supervisor / Area Manager.
Minimum Education and Experience
- High School graduate GED or equivalent required.
- Advanced education classes in math and/or science preferred.
- Foundry or previous manufacturing work experience in a related occupation preferred.
Other Qualifications
- Must be able to read work instructions.
- Must be able to effectively communicate.
- Must be able to physically work in an extreme heat stress environment with exposure to molten metal dust and fumes and ability to wear respirator and other personal protective equipment required for the position.
- Must be physically capable of performing heavy manual duties operate a variety of machinery and equipment and wear required personal protective equipment.
- Math skills to accurately make calculations from formulas.
- Must be able to perform basic keyboard functions / computer skills.
- Must be able to operate a powered industrial truck.
- Must understand chemical symbols.
- Decision making ability under stressful situations.
- Must be able to work in confined spaces.
- Must be able to operate a powered industrial truck.
- Must be able to make quick decisions under stressful conditions
- Must work overtime without prior notice.
- Must be able to climb stairs.
- Basic math skills
