Bookkeeper Job Description
A law firms bookkeeper is responsible for managing the financial records and transactions of a legal practice ensuring accuracy compliance and efficiency in all day-to-day accounting operations.
Core Responsibilities:
- Maintain complete and up-to-date financial records including tracking all expenses revenues and firm transactions in the accounting system.
- Handle client billing: generate process and send invoices track receivables and follow up on outstanding payments.
- Reconcile credit card and vendor statements.
- Perform daily bookkeeping functions including data entry of all receipts disbursements and reconciliations for operational and trust accounts.
- Oversee trust account management: ensure accurate records for client funds held in trust compliance with legal and ethical standards and timely disbursements.
- Prepare and present detailed financial reports such as balance sheets profit and loss statements and case-based reporting to management for decision-making.
- Assist with the annual budgeting process forecasting and responding to financial audit requests.
- Monitor and maintain compliance with relevant accounting regulations tax laws and industry-specific trust accounting rules.
- Coordinate with firm owner and external auditors as needed for reporting and decision-making.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- 2 years of bookkeeping or accounting experience preferably in a law firm or professional service environment.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks) and law firm billing applications.
- Strong organizational skills attention to detail and ability to handle sensitive client and firm data confidentially.
- Knowledge of trust accounting client fund management and legal billing practices.
- Strong communication skills and collaborative work style for coordinating with attorneys support staff and vendors.
