Job Summary

FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt

POSITION OBJECTIVE:

The fundamental reason this position exists is to perform Maintenance and Grounds Care work in the field of Landscape Maintenance in support of the School Districts IGA with City Of Scottsdale. The classification is not designated supervisory; work is performed under general supervision by the Grounds Supervisor. The position is a journey level position and distinguished from the Groundskeeper/Gardner Positions by the experience ability to work independently without close supervision and the certifications required

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES: (These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  1. Performs ground keeping route duties such as policing ball fields as schools involved with the City of Scottsdale recreational sports leagues cleaning and maintaining surrounding facilities to ensure areas are safe litter free and clean.
  2. Performs trash pick-up raking shrub and tree pruning planting trimming fertilizing and general upkeep of the Districts fields utilized by after school sports programs coordinated through the city.
  3. Checks irrigation systems for proper watering schedule; installs maintains and repairs irrigation system lines heads and controllers; troubleshoots controllers and electrical problems; minor repairs; and assists in inspection of contractor projects.
  4. Preps baseball fields and recreation softball fields by dragging compacted soil and high spots and fills in dirt to obtain a smooth surface; maintains infields and running areas to obtain optimum playing conditions.
  5. Uses a variety of hand tools operates an EZ-GO cart and drives District vehicles.
  6. Performs as a team player that works and communicates effectively with District Staff and city Staff. Maintains a detailed written log of activities performed and the amount of time spent on each activity.
  7. Works independently with little or no immediate supervision and makes proper decisions using sound judgment.
  8. Calibrates seed and fertilizers to uniformly plant seed or fertilize turf; calibrate and apply correctly liquid fertilizer and herbicides.
  9. Plants and prunes trees and shrubs utilizing proper methods according to Arizona Landscape Professional Standards.
  10. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: (positions in this class typically require):

Any combination of training education or experience equivalent to one (1) year experience at the Maintenance Worker I level or grounds maintenance landscape work experience.

LICENSING REQUIREMENTS: (positions in this class typically require):

Licensing Requirements:

Valid Arizona Drivers License with no major driving citations in the last 12 months.

Special Requirements:

An Arizona pest Control Applicator certification possessing both turf and ornamental status and weed control (E and F) may be required for some positions in this classification. If this certification is deemed necessary applicants must possess or obtain this certification within the first six months of addition must possess or obtain within one year of hire one or more of the five following certifications: Certified Landscape Auditor. Professional Ground Certification Arizona Certified Professional District Cal-Sense Controller/Water Management.
Training or completion of Extension Turf Grass Certification from University

KNOWLEDGE: (position requirements at entry):

Knowledge of:

Proper landscape industry standards to plant and prune trees and shrubs.

Applicable Federal State and local laws rules regulations codes and standards;

Safe work practices.

SKILLS: (position requirements at entry):

Skill in:

Work independently with little or no immediate supervision as well as the ability to make proper decisions using sound judgment.

Calibrate spreaders for application of liquid and granular fertilizer herbicides and warm and cool season grass seed.

Plant and prune trees and shrubs according to Arizona Landscape Professional standards.

Follow department policies and procedures; safety procedures and practices; traffic control methods.

Learn understand and operate the Districts Cal-Sense Irrigation System. Perform sprinkler maintenance; repair lines heads.

Operate all related landscape maintenance equipment including chain saws and other equipment weighing up to 80 lbs.

Operate a personal computer to check e-mail.

Safely operate EZ-Go cart and drive District vehicles.

Lift empty and carry trash bags or cans weighing approximately 50 lbs.

Operate telephone and radio communications equipment properly.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers supervisors other departments and school staff.

Demonstrate the willingness to assume ownership in completion of assigned tasks.

Complete work orders routes and safety checklists in a complete and readable manner.

Maintain regular consistent attendance and punctuality.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Positions in this class typically require: climbing balancing stooping kneeling reaching standing walking pushing pulling lifting finger dexterity grasping feeling talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions.

Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts electrical currents vibrations fumes odors dusts gases chemicals oils extreme temperatures inadequate lighting and intense noises.

NOTE:

Return To Work Retirees will have an hourly rate approximately 9% lower than listed below without falling below minimum wage.
