Administrative Specialist CL2, Departments of Sociology, Criminology, and Economics

The University of Southern Maines Departments of Sociology Criminology and Economics is seeking an Administrative Specialist CL2.

This position supports the daily operations of the departments including but not limited to:

• Providing a full range of communications both verbally and in writing regarding non-routine questions issues and procedures.
• Handling the most complex and sensitive customer/student requests requiring a comprehensive understanding of relevant policies procedures and rules.
• Preparing individualized responses for non-routine and/or escalated issues.
• Planning and coordinating complex projects and events including related budgeting.

The ideal candidate will bring strong administrative expertise outstanding communication skills and a dedication to supporting a vibrant academic setting. The role requires discretion and the ability to manage confidential information concerning students and faculty. The Department of Sociologyand Criminologyoffers B.A. degrees in both disciplines. Formerly two separate departments sociology and criminology are combining as one program in Fall 2025 and continuing a shared tradition of critical interdisciplinary and global-comparative inquiry. Faculty are nationally and internationally recognized for work on abolition drugs and society sex work gender and sexualities green criminology policing social theory and surveillance. Our collective record of research productivity exceeds the expectations of a regional public university and our faculty are deeply engaged with communities beyond the academy. We especially welcome applicants whose scholarship is rooted in and accountable to grassroots movements for collective liberation.

The USM Economics Programhas a proud tradition of faculty trained in heterodox as well as neo-classical economics. The program seeks faculty who are able to introduce students to standard quantitative and theoretical methods who understand the value of humanistic/liberal arts approaches institutional and historical inquiry student writing and classroom participation.

This Administrative Specialist position will pay a starting rate of $19.61/hour for a new hire or the appropriate transfer rate for a current employee with the University of Maine System. This position is a full-time position based on our Portland Campus.

Required Qualifications:

• High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.) or international degree equivalency
• 1 years of administrative support experience
• Excellent communication and customer service skills
• Computer proficiency including experience working with spreadsheets
• Ability to handle confidential information related to students and faculty
