About the role

Canadian Blood Services is looking for a regular part-time Case Manager to join our dynamic Stem Cells team in our Medical Affairs and Innovation division.

The Stem Cells team is responsible for supporting Canadian Blood Services by providing oversight for the Centre for Innovation organ and stem cell donation and transplantation utilization donor and clinical services medical microbiology and epidemiology. The team ensures that Canadian Blood Services medical and scientific support is provided to the ongoing operations of every aspect of their work.

In this role you will manage the search for an unrelated stem cell donor through all phases of the search process from donor identification through donor harvest. You will act as a resource and advocate for the donor and coordinate search and harvest activities with the collection centres and transplant centres. You will provide information guidance support and advocacy services to bone marrow transplant candidates and their families and manage patient issues that may arise. You will liaise with the donor centres to assist in donor workups and to provide information and support concerning challenging searches and other patient issues

Formula for success

  • Leveraging your ability to exercise judgement tact diplomacy and strict confidentiality you will negotiate and facilitate arrangements between the collection centre and transplant centre to arrive at an agreed harvest date in an expeditious and confidential manner.
  • Drawing on your strong prioritization skills and adherence to tight deadlines you will ensure all required procedures/processes are completed in the correct sequence and time frame while working within stringent time constraints.
  • Utilizing your ability to lead and work collaboratively across a diverse team you will assume the team leader role on a rotational basis; recommend and implement initiatives and/or strategies which enhance communications and team building.
  • You will provide expertise in the development and review of policies and procedures for the UBMDR program.
  • Focusing on your attention to detail and analytical skills you will manage the search process; evaluate and interpret search reports from various international registries using current HLA matching criteria.
  • You will be expected to access and interpret BMDW search programs both computer and internet and process workflows within prescribed time frames.
  • Harnessing your strong interpersonal skills you will confirm that patients are bone marrow transplant candidates and explain the donor search process to patients and their families and provide counseling and support services throughout the search process.
  • You will be expected to alert donor centres of any difficult searches and provide assistance in the development of patient support strategies which may include a targeted campaign for appropriate donors.
  • Using your strong communication and facilitation skills you will participate in the orientation and training of registry staff and educational outreach efforts to increase marrow transplantation knowledge and awareness in the health care provider and volunteer communities. Develop and deliver presentations as required.

Desired education and skills

  • Completion of post-secondary educatoin in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution preferably a university degree in Nursing.
  • Minimum of five (5) years experience of recent clinical experience.
  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in your jurisdictions is a requirement.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential.

What you can expect

  • This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at Canadian Blood Services location 40% of the time/2 days of the week.
  • You will be expected to be on call for 1 week every 2 months for emergency calls.
  • As a part-time employee you will work Wednesday Thursday Friday one week and Monday Tuesday the next week to optimize continuity of care for donors.
