Position Summary

Reporting to the Eagle Urban Transition Centre (EUTC) Program Manager the Employment Counselor will provide advice assistance and resource information to EUTC community members seeking entry level employment and pre-employment supports and will encourage support and empower community members to work towards achieving personal goals in areas as; manufacturing entry level employment training and/or education. Provide both one to one supportive counselling and will work with other EUTC counsellors to address identified community member barriers.



Key Responsibilities

  • Work with members of the EUTC New Beginnings Housing Support Team (Non-Housing First) and Fresh Start Housing Team (Housing First) in a coordinated effort to improve service delivery and efficient use of resources.
  • Establish a trusting relationship and interview clients to obtain employment history skills educational background and career goals.
  • Create maintain and update paper and database client and program files.
  • Receiving EIA referrals and maintain relationships with Clients and Employment Income Assistance regarding attendance.
  • Coordinate and deliver life skills sessions on relevant topics to community members seeking employment training and/or education.
  • Assist with resume and cover letter development.
  • Help with cold calling and interviewing skills.
  • Network with potential employers.
  • Provide one to one life skills sessions to community members seeking employment training and/or education.
  • Coordination of EUTC monthly community member workshops on topics such as skill development sessions industry awareness employment safety First Aid/CPR Food Handler certification etc.
  • Coordination and distribution of job seeker resources including work boots safety glasses outdoor work clothing safety vests etc.
  • Identify barriers to employment and assist community members with goal setting in areas such as job readiness skills job search strategies resumes and preparing for job interviews.
  • Assess community member job readiness in areas such as communication training reliability work history essential skills etc.
  • Assess need for assistance such as rehabilitation financial aid or further training and refer clients to the appropriate services.
  • Provide community member referrals to available resources and supports including financial aid training upgrading motivation and other appropriate services.
  • Provide established workers with information on maintaining a job or moving within an organization dealing with job dissatisfaction making mid-career changes and adjusting to workplace transitions.
  • Collect current labour market information for community members regarding job openings entry and skill requirements and other occupational information.
  • Coordination of an e-mail network and employment information to prospective job seekers and community resources.
  • Provide resources and outreach to First Nation communities in areas relevant to employment training and education.
  • Provide consulting services to community groups and agencies businesses industry and other organizations involved in providing community-based career planning support or resources.
  • Liaise with training educational institutions and manufacturing employers to offer supportive service and advice for effective First Nation/Aboriginal participation and recruitment.
  • Advocate and provide support to EUTC community members experiencing job loss and/or discrimination.
  • Provide outreach and support to Aboriginal Youth attending the Eagles Nest project.
  • Provide community member case management reporting and data utilizing the EUTC process.
  • Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications: Education & Experience

  • Undergraduate degree or college diploma in Psychology Social Work Education.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Excellent verbal written inter-personal communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office software Word Excel and Outlook.
  • Be able to follow office practices procedures and maintain confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of First Nation people and communities.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good interpersonal relationships.
  • Ability to function effectively as a team member.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and be able to travel upon request.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 drivers license and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check Clear Child Abuse Registry Checks.
