Position Summary
As Communications Manager you will play a pivotal role in advancing Hunger Free Vermonts mission by crafting implementing and managing the organizations communications strategies. You will oversee all digital communication channelsincluding email website and social mediaand maintain an editorial calendar to support fundraising advocacy program communications and community engagement ensuring our public-facing content is clear compelling timely and aligned with organizational priorities. You will manage communications timelines and deliverables and develop content that deepens engagement with supporters partners and media while working to shift the public narrative about hunger toward solutionsand vision of a future of food security for will act as a connector across teams helping align communications with Hunger Free Vermonts strategic priorities valuesand equity commitments while fostering a culture of clarity collaboration and continuous improvement in all our communications.
We are also considering highly qualified candidates at the Deputy Director level. The Deputy Director will take on an expanded leadership role with responsibility for setting organizational communications strategy and making high-level communications decisions. This would be an ideal role for a candidate who brings significant experience in areas such as:
- Building and maintaining strong relationships with the media and reporters in Vermont or demonstrating the ability to cultivate these relationships effectively.
- Leading the development and implementation of organization-wide communications strategy.
- Establishing and maintaining organizational messaging and talking points and training staff in their use.

You will be part of the organizations Program Team a highly collaborative group focused on the organizations policy advocacy community engagement and training initiatives. Nearly all aspects of your work will involve some level of partnership and shared problem-solving with others.

Focus of Position
Strategic Communications:
- Develop communications strategies to support program advocacy fundraising and outreach work
- Maintain and manage a unified editorial calendar aligned with organizational priorities
- Manage day-to-day communications across email website and social media channels using project management tool Asana
- Ensure consistent use of message frames and narrative change priorities across the organization
Content Creation and Digital Engagement:
- Support staff with talking points messaging and content review and approvals.
Media and Public Relations:
- Draft and edit press releases media advisories public statements and other external communications.
- Build and maintain relationships with reporters and media outlets
- Track media coverage and maintain accurate records of media contacts.
Analytics and Tools:
- Track communications metrics (email web social media media coverage) and use data to inform improvements.
- Manage and optimize advocacy CRM (EveryAction) in collaboration with other staff.
- Stay current on communications trends and emerging digital tools.
Project and Contractor Management:
- Supervise contractors including our graphic designers and other communications contractors as needed ensuring outputs are aligned with brand voice and style
Cross Organizational Responsibilities:
- Represent the organization at events and outreach opportunities as needed
- All members of the Programs Team support the Development and Finance Teams by developing and managing project budgets documenting work and contributing ideas information and language for grant proposals and reports.
- Other duties as assigned

- 35 years of professional experience in communications or marketing
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement communications strategies that align with organizational goals
- Excellent writing editing and storytelling skills; ability to translate complex topics into clear compelling content
- Strong project management skills; ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines; experience with Asana is a plus
- Proven ability to work collaboratively manage complex projects and build positive relationships with other staff and external partners
- Knowledge of digital engagement tools and best practices (email marketing social media management analytics platforms); experience with Google Analytics Sprout Social EveryAction and Squarespace is a plus
- Ability to operate basic computer and internet programs like Google Suite and a willingness to learn new systems applications and technologies on the job
- Basic graphic design and video editing skills
- Experience in media relationships and building strong relationships with reporters
- Experience managing communications contractors or some supervisory experience
- A belief that hunger and its root causes are solvable and a desire to contribute to ending these injustices for everyone in Vermont.
- A strong commitment to ongoingly reflect learn and act to dismantle white supremacist ideologies and practices (including individualism perfectionism a belief in one right way either/or thinking fear of open conflict a right to comfort power hoarding and constant urgency) as they show up in ourselves our organization and the work that we do.
