Job Description:

The Department of English at Fairfield Universitys Meditz College of Arts and Sciences invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of English in Community Writing/English Education position starting Fall 2026 pending final budgetary approval.

The primary teaching responsibility will be undergraduate courses for English majors and teacher candidates and in the Universitys Magis Core curriculum. This position carries a 3-3 course teaching load and includes the opportunity to develop new courses in the candidates area of expertise and a one-semester pre-tenure research leave as well as a sabbatical following every 12 semesters of teaching.

Community engagement is an integral part of Fairfield University and reflects the Universitys Jesuit Catholic tradition. The Center for Social Impact supports faculty in community-engaged teaching and research through faculty development grants and logistical support. Fairfield University is the site of an affiliate of the National Writing Project providing professional development and work with youth throughout southern Connecticut. Teacher preparation in the English Department benefits from its connections to the Connecticut Writing Project-Fairfield and the School of Education and Human Development.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ph.D. in Writing Studies English English Education or closely related field
  • Evidence of successful teaching and curriculum development at the college level
  • Promise of continued research agenda including research and/or engagement with community-based writing.
  • Evidence of engagement with community beyond campus.
  • Ability to support develop and promote the program in secondary education for English majors.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional experience with K-12 education
  • Ability to support teacher candidates.
  • Interest in developing ongoing Community-Engaged Learning relationships and curricula.
