Your new role

Southend-on-Sea City Council is seeking to appoint an Enforcement Officer to join the team on a part-time permanent basis (2 days per week). This role plays a key part in protecting the public and supporting fair business practices. You will carry out basic trading standards duties such as checking that goods are correctly described priced and safe for consumers. You will also respond to complaints from the public undertake routine inspections and provide advice to local businesses to help them comply with the law.

In addition after training you will be responsible for administering and enforcing animal licensing regulations. This includes inspecting premises such as kennels catteries and pet shops to ensure they meet welfare standards issuing licenses where appropriate and taking enforcement action when conditions are not met. This will require you to study a City and Guilds level course in animal licensing and may include personal study time.

N:B - The advertised salary will be pro rata.

What youll need to succeed

To be successful in this role you should have:

  • A qualification relevant to enforcement within a local authority.
  • Basic knowledge of relevant regulatory services legislation and enforcement procedures.
  • Experience of enforcement functions within a local authority or other statutory body.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with clients customers and colleagues.
  • Good written numerical verbal and keyboard skills.
  • Ability to understand and meet the requirements of clients/customers.
  • A methodical approach to following procedures policies and schedules.
  • Compliance with legal and safety requirements.
  • Ability to analyse interpret and apply relevant information.
  • Organisational awareness and understanding of the Councils aims and functions.
  • A commitment to promoting an open and collaborative culture across the organisation.
