Job Summary

ACADEMIC FACULTY APPOINTMENT: The Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine

A Tenure-Track Associate/Assistant Professor in Population Science at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine is expected to contribute to the development of research and teaching at the School. He/she is expected to undertake high quality internationally leading research within the Population and Global Health Research Programme in line with the overarching research strategy of Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine in addition to any other duties as assigned by the Vice Dean Research and Dean.

The appointee will be expected to develop and pursue research focused on the determinants of health in Asian populations leveraging longitudinal population cohort and linked health care record particular the applicant will have the opportunity to pursue research within SG100K population study which comprises comprehensive behavioural phenotypic multi-omics data electronic health record linkage and prospective outcomes from 100000 people. The SG100K study has emerged as a key strategic resource for epidemiological and precision medicine research in Singapore and is funded by the National Medical Research Council (NMRC) the National Research Foundation Singapore (NRF) the National Precision Medicine Program as well as industry and philanthropic sources.

Key Responsibilities

Job Purpose:

  • The appointee will be expected to undertake high quality multi-disciplinary primary research in understanding disease predisposition and progression in Asian populations. This includes the use of large population cohorts and multimodal data integration leveraging multi-omics data and electronic health records to disentangle the network of susceptibility factors that lead to complex diseases in humans with a particular focus on ageing and chronic diseases. The research may include traditional behavioural and clinical epidemiological approaches as well as of advanced data science and/or artificial intelligence methodologies to uncover factors associated with disease progression.

  • The appointee is expected to undertake teaching and educational responsibilities for the training of medical students and postgraduate research students. Teaching methods will include extensive use of team-based learning and e-learning.

  • The appointee is expected to contribute to integration of the science relating to population and global health into the MBBS curriculum and to ensure the delivery of excellence in these areas including the team-based delivery of the curriculum.

Primary Activities:

  • Undertake high quality research activities by sustaining a personal research plan developing innovative research proposals and funding bids managing and undertaking research activities publishing in international peer reviewed journals reviewing manuscripts and grant applications when appropriate.

  • Seek competitive grant and collaborative industry funding to develop a sustainable research programme.

  • Contribute to support and develop teaching and educational activity at undergraduate level and supervise undergraduate students.

  • Contribute to support and develop teaching and educational activity at undergraduate and graduate level and supervise undergraduate and graduate students.

  • Develop and support research projects (including interdisciplinary) with other faculty in the field of Population and Global Health at LKCMedicine and across the wider NTU community. These may include research that pertains to all health aspects relating to population and global health in particular in relation to the drivers of chronic disease patterns and risk factors within multi-ethnic Asian populations.

  • Supervise and mentor junior faculty members and research staff

  • Participate in academic committees and meet other administrative requirements as appropriate.

Person Specification

Qualifications Knowledge and Experience:

  • MBBS/MD and/or PhD degree(s)
  • Relevant postdoctoral or clinical experience
  • Significant experience and outstanding record of translational clinical research and teaching with a high level of scientific achievement productivity and impact in the field of population health and chronic disease epidemiology.

Management and Teamwork:

  • Ability to lead and work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to work co-operatively with medical and non-medical staff
  • Ability to supervise research staff and students

Communicating and Influencing:

  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff and students
  • Ability to motivate others
  • Strong presentation skills
  • Ability to work in a team

Desirable attributes:

  • Experience and desire to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and training.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop teams and to create networks.
  • Fully conversant with patient-centred approach to modern medicine and the use of new technologies in both education and patient care.
  • Understanding of the academic and administrative needs of internationally recognised universities.
  • Ability to work in and develop teams and to create networks at both a national and international level.
  • Track record of having supervised graduate students to successful completion of PhDs.

Time Commitment

The level of effort for this appointment is at 1.0 full time equivalent (FTE) employment.
