With a legacy spanning over 130 years Henry Street is one of New York Citys largest and most respected social service agencies offering more than 50 innovative and effective programs that promote equity empowerment and community well-being.
Program Overview
The Children & Youth Services division includes:
Early Childhood Education (ECE): Full-day program (8:00 AM6:00 PM MonFri) serving children year-round.
After School & Camp Services: Operates during after-school hours and full days on select school holidays across multiple school- and community-based sites and provides summer day camps serving nearly 400 children across four sites. Athletics & Community Enrichment: Offers dynamic in-house programs including basketball Saturday Night Lights boxing flag football and enrichment programs such as NYCHA Teen Expansion. The SUNY ATTAIN lab offers a range of digital upskilling opportunities to children and adults alike featuring certification opportunities for Microsoft Office Suite. Collectively the envision serves over 2500 young people annually with programming that is developmentally appropriate academically aligned and socially enriching. All programs are compliant with NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) regulations and other city agency standards.
Position Overview
The Vice President of Children & Youth Services provides strategic leadership and operational oversight of the Early Childhood Education After School & Camp Services Athletics & Community Enrichment Services and the SUNY ATTAIN Lab. The VP is responsible for ensuring the delivery of safe high-quality and culturally responsive programming that promotes academic achievement social-emotional development and physical wellness.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- Masters degree required (MSW preferred); SIFI certification a plus.
- Minimum 10 years of relevant supervisory and management experience in youth development or education.
- Experience managing unionized staff strongly preferred.
Skills & Knowledge
- Strong organizational communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proven ability to manage complex multi-tiered budgets.
- Familiarity with:
- NYC licensing regulations (DOHMH/SACC)
- DYCD ACS and DOE compliance standards
- Early childhood educational frameworks such as the Creative Curriculum
- Skilled in stakeholder engagement partnership development and team leadership.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite Excel and data management platforms.
Additional Requirements
- Ability to travel to multiple sites across the Lower East Side.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Program Oversight
- Provide direct oversight of all program areas: ECE After School Camps Athletics & Enrichment and the SUNY ATTAIN Lab.
- Supervise department directors and assistant directors; conduct performance evaluations and establish accountability standards.
- Ensure compliance with city and state licensing safety and quality assurance standards.
Operations & Staff Development
- Develop and implement staff training workflows and scheduling in partnership with program leaders.
- Oversee recruitment retention and professional development of staff including unionized personnel.
- Maintain effective communication and strong relationships with families community partners and stakeholders.
Strategic Planning & Evaluation
- Design and implement programs aligned with community needs educational standards and best practices.
- Establish objectives outcomes and evaluation tools to ensure continuous improvement.
- Lead the development and execution of new initiatives and strategic priorities.
Financial Management & Compliance
- Oversee multi-tiered program budgets in collaboration with program directors.
- Ensure fiscal responsibility and adherence to funding requirements.
- Support compliance with contracts and regulations from agencies such as DYCD DOHMH ACS and DOE.
Fundraising & External Relations
- Partner with Development to support fundraising efforts and board engagement.
- Collaborate on proposals reports and RFPs to secure and sustain funding.
- Serve as a liaison to government agencies funders and community partners.
Community Engagement & Culture
- Foster a culture of inclusion equity and professionalism.
- Promote community involvement especially among historically underserved populations.
- Partner with the VP of Education & Community Social Work to integrate best practices in social-emotional support.
Essential Functions
- On-site presence required.
- Occasional evening or weekend work may be needed.
- Regular travel to program locations throughout the Lower East Side.
