1.0 FTE Indigenous Success Teacher

Indigenous Education Department

This is a temporary assignment effective immediately to June 30 2026 or to return of teacher to full contractual FTE whichever comes first. This assignment is to be worked at Salmon Arm Secondary

The location will be determined in consultation with the Assistant Superintendent of Indigenous Education and the District Principal of Indigenous Education. Please note that the successful applicant will be a department staff member not a school staff member. The location worked may change based on the needs of Indigenous students in schools. Supervision of ISTs is shared between school-based administrators and the District Principal of Indigenous Education.

The assignment will facilitate a positive experience for Indigenous Students with the aim to increase their success at the Secondary level with a focus in Numeracy Math and Science. Improving completion rates for Indigenous students is a focus of this role.

Qualifications:

  • A strong background in Indigenous history/studies or related course work is considered an asset;
  • valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch;
  • Strong curricular background at the Middle/Secondary Level;
  • Preference given to teachers with inclusive education training or certification.
Teachers applying for this position should possess the following attributes:
  • demonstrated success working with Indigenous youth in an educational setting;
  • demonstrated success improving completion rates for Indigenous students;
  • demonstrated experience working closely with Indigenous communities;
  • familiarity with implementation of the Local Education Agreement(s);
  • demonstrated ability to relate effectively and positively to students;
  • successful classroom teacher experience;
  • experience with teaching middle/secondary math and science;
  • strong interpersonal and communication skills;
  • demonstrated success in establishes a trusting relationship and clear open communication between schools and Indigenous families and communities;
  • strong belief in Indigenous students success and abilities;
  • experience in work experience and career prep activities aligned to academic programs and services and related support (e.g. scheduling timetabling etc.)
  • a demonstrated commitment to personal professional development;
  • experience in supporting students with IEPs;
  • successful experience in case management and multi-agency collaborations;
  • familiar with bursary and scholarship processes and applications.
