Do you want to help students explore and improve their writing skills

The City Arts Centre is looking for up to 2 outstanding individuals to join our Creative Writing team. Creative Writing Program Specialists develop plan and deliver creative writing programs to students of all ages. Our instructors are responsible for creating effective learning environments for students while respecting their diverse cultural and educational backgrounds experiences and individual learning styles.

We offer affordable daytime evening and weekend courses to all ages and skill levels at the City Arts Centre and its outreach facilities.

What you will do:

  • Develop lesson plans that are skill level appropriate over 8-10 week sessions as well as one-class workshops on specific creative writing themes.

  • Prepare the classroom setting and supplies for each weekly class

  • Instruct on all technical aspects and some history of creative writing

  • Create a positive learning environment and coach participants to develop successful writing projects

  • Adapt lessons to many different skill levels learning styles and backgrounds

  • Implement safety and clean-up procedures established for the facility in keeping with OH&S standards

  • Build relationships with students and help them reach their goals

  • Assist in the distribution and collection of program evaluations

  • Communicate regularly with coordinators and facility staff

  • Attend seasonal in-services mock emergency sessions and other training as necessary

  • Perform other related duties as required

  • Must be at least 18 years of age

  • Completion of grade 12 is a requirement

  • Experience delivering creative writing or poetry programs in a recreation school or professional setting is required

  • Demonstrated knowledge of creative writing and/or poetry. Knowledge of forms such as (but not limited to) slam poetry creative nonfiction memoir genre fiction (mystery sci fi fantasy romance etc.) and contemporary fiction

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in a classroom setting

  • Ability to interact and engage with students in addition to maintaining a safe environment

  • Demonstrated problem solving ability

  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

Assets:

  • Completion of formal training in creative writing or post-secondary degree from a recognized institution in Creative Writing English Comparative Literature Education or in a related field is an asset

  • Experience delivering programs to groups of children and teens is an asset

  • Publication history is an asset

  • First Aid and CPR training is an asset

Skills required for success:

  • Demonstrated ability to teach mentor and instruct adults

  • Demonstrated ability and experience in creating lesson plans

  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally in a classroom setting with coworkers and the general public

  • Demonstrated problem solving ability

  • Commitment to excellence in your writing practice

  • Ability to critique students work thoughtfully and guide them to become better writers

Conditions of employment:

  • Hire is dependent upon a Police Information Check including Vulnerable Sector check satisfactory to the City of Edmonton

Work Environment:

  • The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time. Any changes will be made in accordance with the City of Edmonton/Civic Service Union 52 collective agreement and the incumbent will be notified in advance.
