Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Pūkenga/Pūkenga Matua - Lecturer/Senior Lecturer to join the Initial Teacher Education team within Te Whānau o Ako Pai - School of Education. This permanent full-time position will commence in late January 2026.

In this role you will teach graduate and postgraduate courses within the Primary Initial Teacher Education programmes and may also be required to contribute to the Secondary Initial Teacher Education programmes. You will be expected to undertake the visiting of Student Teachers on Professional Practice Placements in schools seek external research funding and recruit and supervise Masters and PhD students in research topics related to mathematics teaching and learning in the school sector.

Contribution to Hautūtanga/leadership to the profession University Faculty and School and engagement in scholarly and administrative services is also expected.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

The successful candidate will have an understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the bicultural nature of New Zealand education hold relevant academic qualifications a New Zealand recognised teaching qualification and have successful experience in primary teaching mathematics and/or primary mathematics teacher particular we welcome applications from people with expertise knowledge and experience of culturally sustaining and enhancing practices mātauranga Māori and/or with working with Pacific communities and tamariki.

Key requirements:

  • Completed (or be close to completing) PhD in Education.
  • Experience in and knowledge of the science of learning and structured numeracy in primary school teaching.
  • Experience and specialisation in applied research related to primary mathematicseducation and/or teacher education in the area of primary mathematics.
  • Registration and certification (or eligibility for registration and certification) with the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand.
  • Effectively engage and mentor students from different backgrounds.
  • Demonstratedability to work collegially in a team.
  • Contribute effectively to the delivery of the Primary Initial Teacher Education programmes.
  • Evidence of a commitment to our obligations to Te Tiriti o Waitangi in an academic and professional context.
