What does the Financial Institutions (FI) team do in ING

The FI Coverage team is responsible for relationship management with banks and non-bank financial institutions based in Japan. The intern will play a key role in supporting the FI Coverage team in managing and developing productive relationships with our target clients while also ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements particularly in relation to Know Your Customer (KYC) standards. This role offers the intern an opportunity to gain insight into the banking industry and the wide range of ING products and services.

Our clients are professional institutions with deep market knowledge including top Japanese banks asset managers insurance companies and financial sponsors.

Financial Institutions (FIs) as Our Clients

FIs require banking services just like any other clients.

These services include trade finance payment services custody and capital markets solutions.

FIs as our suppliers

The relationship with FIs is two-way: we both buy from and sell to each other.

Reciprocity is a fundamental aspect of relationship management.

FIs as part of the financial system

Banks are integral to the interconnected global financial system. They rely on each other for liquidity and balance sheet management.

Examples include money market lines and syndicated loans both given and received.

Banks also serve as key counterparties for hedging the derivative needs of our corporate clients.

Banks and Non-Bank FIs as investors

Non-bank FIs and bank treasury desks (liquidity portfolios) are major investors in financial products and securities.

Non-bank FIs also provide term funding to ING through investments in ING-issued commercial paper bonds and equity.

They place substantial deposits with ING (funds entrusted).

FIs as a competitor

At times we share the same clients and offer similar services in the same regions.

What would you be doing

Assist with the Compliance Due Diligence (CDD) and Know Your Customer (KYC) processes.

Support the preparation of various reports and data collection for internal and external meetings.

Contribute to ad hoc projects such as pitch presentations database updates annual reviews and client mapping related to Financial Institutions (both Banks and Non Banks).

Monitor client-related information and market news and share relevant client and sector developments with the team.

Maintain and update various systems particularly Grid KYC/CDD platforms and the client relationship management system.

What qualities and skills are we looking for

We are looking for a passionate individual who meets the following criteria:

Qualifications:

A major in Business Accountancy or Economics is preferred; however candidates from other academic backgrounds are also welcome to apply.

Prior experience in banking (wholesale or commercial) is highly valued but not required.

Skills & competencies:

Proficiency in both English and Japanese (fluency in both languages is preferred).

Strong command of Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.

Proactive diligent and capable of working independently while being a strong team player. Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage tight deadlines.

Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to thrive in a multicultural team environment
