FOR CINCINNATI BOARD OF EDUCATION EMPLOYEES ONLY
TITLE: LEVEL 1A BUILDING ENGINEER (BofE)
SALARY RANGE: $25.74 per hour

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
The Level 1A Building Engineer position provides supervision of custodial staff performs custodial related tasks including grounds maintenance general maintenance building security and safety. Performs other work such as moving furniture receiving and sorting supplies snow and ice removal etc. necessary to operating a school. Minor maintenance of HVAC equipment i.e. replacing filters checking chemical feed systems and troubleshooting complaint calls.
WHO MAY COMPETE ON THE EXAM: All classified permanent employees with the Cincinnati Public Schools who meet the qualifications listed below as of Wednesday October 15 2025 All required experience must be with the Cincinnati Public Schools and must have occurred within the last(5) five years. IT IS THE POLICY OF THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION THAT TEMPORARY TRANSFER AND/OR PROMOTION TIME WILL NOT BE COUNTED FOR EXAMINATION ELIGIBILITY PURPOSES (CIVIL SERVICE RULE 10 SECTION 2 8/3/89). IT IS THE POLICY OF THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION THAT EMPLOYEES MUST NOT HAVE BEEN DEMOTED TO A LOWER CLASSIFICATION AS A RESULT OF A DISCIPLINARY ACTION IN THE TWELVE MONTH PERIOD PRECEDING THE EXAMINATION. EMPLOYEES MAY NOT HAVE FAILED THEIR PROBATIONARY PERIOD IN THE TWELVE MONTH PERIOD PRECEDING THE EXAMINATION UNLESS IN THE JUDGEMENT OF THE CIVIL SERVICE SECRETARY THE FAILURE WILL NOT AFFECT THEIR USEFULNESS IN SOME OTHER TYPE OF EMPLOYMENT. (CIVIL SERVICE RULE 10 SECTION 2 C&D.)
REQUIRED SERVICE RATING:
The last two and of three service ratings must be satisfactory or above.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Must have one year of satisfactory service as a Level 1 Building Engineer with certification in the following: HVAC R1; Universal CFC Alice training Basic Electricity; and Boiler 2 or must satisfactorily complete the course work within a year or as close as scheduling of mandatory classes permits. To assume responsibility for a building. The employer agrees to provide not less than 150 hours of orientation training with a Level II Building Engineer or a HVAC Technician.
PROBATIONARY PERIOD:
90days for promotions within the bargaining unit.
KNOWLEDGE OF:
Basic arithmetic and English.
Basic computer skills MS Office functions and Group Wise.
Basic types of heating systems.
Basics of supervision.
Basic types of heating and air conditioning systems.
Building crafts skills sufficient to perform minor or routine and emergency repair work.
General knowledge to disconnect/disable building systems i.e gas water electric.
Basic knowledge of emergency safety systems.
Custodial (including grounds maintenance) procedures supplies tools and equipment.
Department/Board rules regulations benefits forms etc.
ABILITY TO:
Keep simple records and prepare simple reports.
Communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.
Ability to execute emails create word documents reports and spread sheets.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Perform chemical analysis and treatment of water to maintain prescribed standards in heating and cooling systems if required.
Recognize health safety and security problems and to respond appropriately.
Keep abreast of new technology.
Work under stressful situations/conditions; make decisions especially in critical situations.
Work independently in absence of supervision.
Perform preventive maintenance to custodial equipment and as directed to HVAC equipment.
Provide instructions/demonstrations/training in work to be performed.
Establish schedules priorities; delegate work; appraise work of others.
Work overtime weekends and other than normal day shift.
Seek continuing education/training in order to advance knowledge and skill in the field and in job performance.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Free of criminal convictions especially in crimes involving non-adults controlled substances intoxication pornography and burglary/robbery.
Physical strength and stamina to lift/carry/move heavy objects weighing as much as 100 pounds and occasionally much heavier.
Willing and able to work at heights on ladders and scaffolding as much as 30 feet.
Willing and able to work in cramped dirty dusty and isolated areas.
Body structure does not prevent access to work areas such as narrow crawl spaces.
This is a sensitive classification therefore applicants for appointment must pass security clearance which includes a check of employment references and criminal records.

SUBJECTS AND WEIGHTS OF TEST SECTIONS:
The selection process is worth 100% of the exam grade and consists of an Oral Board exam. The passing score will be determined after the examination by the Civil Service Examiner together with the Secretary. Determination of the passing score will be based on the job analysis analysis of examination results consultation with subject matter experts or other professional methods. Seniority points will be added to passing scores.
