About the role

We are seeking enthusiastic senior nurses to join our newly established General Surgical Assessment Unit (SAU). This unit covers the following specialities: General Surgery Upper GI Colorectal Urology Plastics Vascular Gynae providing a fit for purpose environment for patients requiring acute surgical assessment. It is envisaged that this role will provide opportunities for suitably experienced senior nurses to lead early assessment including patient work up including facilitating diagnostics and developing plans of care in collaboration with Surgical medical team. This provides an enhanced patient experience by improving time to diagnosis and treatment in this surgically focused setting leading to better outcomes for patients.

  • The unit will be operational 24/7 and has a phased approach to implementation
  • End state will provide 6 Bed 5 chair Surgical Assessment Unit located on the 4th Floor of Dunedin Hospital.
  • provide improved acute surgical patient care and assessment in fit for purpose environments
  • Potential to work towards an NP pathway in the future.

About you

  • Current NZ nursing council registration
  • Minimum Post Graduate Certificate with endorsement in advanced health assessment and hold or be working towards post graduate diploma and/or masters degree
  • Advanced clinical skills such as cannulation and RN prescribing rights/ or working towards this is an advantage
  • Advanced communication techniques such as conflict resolution diffusion and mediation skills.
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Base skills in quality improvement work such as protocols and guidelin development adverse event review

Salary range

This role is covered by the terms and conditions of the expired NZNO CEA and the salary will be in accordance with the Designated Senior Nurse Pay Scale Grade 2 between step 1 $116040 and step 3 $127674 p.a dependant on relevant experience.
