Job Description

Position Title:

Adjunct Diseases of Woody Plants- Barnes Horticulture Certificate Program

Time Type:

Part time

Position Summary and Qualifications:

The successful candidate will serve as the primary instructor for the Diseases of Woody Plants course in the Barnes Horticultural Certificate Program at Saint Josephs University. This course explores the biotic and abiotic factors affecting tree and shrub health in the Delaware Valley with an emphasis on diagnostic processes and field observation.

The instructor will develop and deliver a course where students learn:
- Signs and symptoms of woody plant diseases
- Diagnostic procedures for biotic and abiotic disorders
- Plant health care strategies and integrated pest management
- Common regional plant diseases and stress factors observed in the field

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Essential Duties:
  • Develop and deliver the Diseases of Woody Plants course as described above
  • Incorporate field-based observation and student engagement into every class (weather permitting)
  • Upload course materials slides and announcements to Canvas for student use
  • Provide guidance on diagnostic tools and resources such as lenses and scouting guides

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • Bachelors Degree in Arboriculture Plant Pathology Horticulture or a related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge of woody plant diseases and diagnostic techniques
  • Ability to use the Canvas learning management system
  • Ability to work effectively within a diverse university community

Preferred:

  • ISA Board Certified Master Arborist or equivalent certification
  • Prior teaching or public education experience

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL WORK HOURS:

  • Time Commitment: 10.5 hours over 7 weeks per academic year
  • Fieldwork is expected in most sessions and may involve standing walking and outdoor exposure.
