Job Summary

Position Description



Director of Finance serves as the senior financial leader of the Harris County Public Defenders office (HCPDO). This role is responsible for providing strategic direction oversight and management of all financial operations ensuring fiscal accountability and compliance with county state and federal requirements. The Director of Finance partners closely with the Chief Public Defender and senior leadership to align financial planning with duties and responsibilities.


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement the offices financial strategy aligning budgets and resources with organizational goals.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Chief Public Defender and executive team on fiscal matters resource allocation and long-term planning.
  • Lead financial modeling and forecasting to support sustainable growth and innovation.
  • Prepare and manage the annual operating budget in collaboration with the Chief Defender and the county budget office.
  • Monitor expenditures ensuring compliance with county state and federal regulations.
  • Track and report on grant funding and contracts.
  • Ensure accurate and timely financial reporting for internal stakeholders oversight bodies and external funders.
  • Maintain strong internal controls to safeguard public funds and assets.
  • Coordinate and support internal and external audits the mission of providing high-quality client-centered defense services.

Requirements

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting Finance Business Administration or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Minimum of seven (7) to ten (10) years of experience in finance accounting or budgeting.
    • Including at least three (3) years in a senior leadership role.

Preferences

  • Masters Degree in Accounting Finance or Business Administration preferred.
  • Experience working in government nonprofit or public-sector organizations preferred.

General Information

Position Type and Typical Hours of Work:

  • Regular Full-time

  • Monday - Friday 8:00 A.M. 5:00 P.M.


Salary:

  • Depends on Qualifications

  • Based on 26 pay periods



    Employment may be contingent on passing a drug screen and meeting other standards.
