Position: Civil Technician

Division: Management Services Western Cape

REPORTS TO

Section Manager or any other person appointed to supervise him/her from time to time.

PRIMARY POSITION PURPOSE

Primarily employed to work on the Overberg Road Asset Management System (RAMS) project. However when no tasks are required on this project the employee will be expected to assist on any other projects or opportunities within the Function.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Overberg RAMS Project (Site -Based Activities):

• Conduct visual inspections of various road types (flexible gravel block-paved concrete) in accordance with TMH 9 and TMH 12.
• Assist with bridge and major culvert inspections under TMH 19 guidelines.
• Capture and process field data using mobile devices and GIS software.
• Participate in traffic counting operations including manual and video-supported counts.
• Support the development and updating of the GIS-based road inventory.
• Perform data analysis and assist in interpreting road condition and traffic data.
• Contribute to maintenance planning.
• Ensure quality control of collected data under supervision.
• Attend training sessions on technical procedures GIS and reporting standards.
• Collaborate with mentors on career development and professional registration.
• Assist with monthly and quarterly reporting to the client and National Department of Transport including preparation and presentation of feedback.
• Participate in strategic support activities and stakeholder engagements.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation of inspections and assessments.
• Engage with local municipalities and communities during data collection phases.
• Adhere to health and safety protocols and use appropriate PPE during fieldwork.

Tasks on other projects could include the following amongst other tasks:

• Data-collection/ Site: Assist with data collection organization and analysis for project reports and presentations.
• Site Monitoring: Continuous monitoring of work on site enforcement of standards/ specifications and check of payment certificates.
• Documentation & Reporting: Produce high-quality drawings write meeting minutes produce documentation and assist with tender documentation.
• Team & Stakeholder Engagement: Participate in technical discussions and interact with project teams and external consultants.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS

• Capability and desire to learn.
• Understand the importance and ensure that appropriate technical standards drawing standards application of software tools and quality procedures are maintained on all projects.
• Complete quality documentation within a required timeframe.
• Proficiency in basic design packages such as QGIS and AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel Word PowerPoint and Outlook) database management systems and data entry software.

RECOMMENDED QUALIFICATIONS

• A N. Dip in relevant field
• Previous work experience would be advantageous
