FUNCTION:
To promote the educational development academic success and well being of each student through the application of leadership supervisory and management skills.
REPORTS TO: Principal
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Administrator of Special Education Certificate or Principals Certification (Secondary)
- Special Education Certified and a minimum of 5 years of successful teaching experience as a special educator.
- Professional and intellectual competence to coordinate and administer the functions of the Special Education Department.
- Knowledge of resources available at the local and state level to support students with disabilities.
- Knowledge of high school philosophy and practice.
- Training and demonstrated skill in evaluation and assessment of teacher performance and knowledge of clinical supervision.
- Understanding/experience of human relations communications leadership budgeting and organizational theory.
- Understanding/experience and knowledge of the New England Schools and Colleges (NEASC) accreditation process.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the Rhode Island Graduation Diploma System
- Demonstrated skill in promoting sensitivity awareness and cultural diversity.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium - Standards for School Leaders (ISLLC Standards).
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
The Assistant Principal for Special Related Services will as directed by the building principal assist in:
- While performing the duties of this job the Assistant Principal for Special Related Services must be able to meet multiple demands from several people. He/she will be expected to use his/her car to travel to school/meetings. Reimbursement for mileage will be made. This administrator will be based at the assigned school.
- The Assistant Principal for Special Related Services is responsible to the Principal and Executive Director of Educational Programs and Services.
- Supervises procedures for referrals assessments identification of students with disabilities TQP meetings and IEP meetings.
- Assists the school team in the development and implementation of the Individual Education Plan.
- Assists in the development of class lists and works cooperatively with guidance department in the development of student schedules and educational planning for students with special needs.
- Evaluates special education teaching staff teacher assistants and one-on-one aides.
- Creates a professional climate that will result in the improvement of teaching and learning.
- Integrates the work of the Special Education Department into the total instructional program of the school.
- Effectively communicates and develops positive relationships with parents professional personnel and the general public.
- Assists in developing the department budget recommending and requisitioning books supplies equipment and the repair/replacement of equipment.
- Continuously monitors student progress to determine the degree of achievement effectiveness of instruction and needs of the department.
- Consults with the Director of Special Education regarding implementation of State and Federal Regulations.
- Support the implementation of the comprehensive Secondary School Reform Initiative.
- Assists in the construction and implementation of the master schedule.
- Plan and direct in-service training programs designed to help educators improve student achievement.
- Uses test results to lead the learning community in the development of long and short term school improvement goals.
- Oversees the placement of all students in the school to maximize their achievement in the most appropriate education setting.
- Promoting the establishment of a productive environment for all district staff and students in order to promote self-actualization achievement teamwork affiliation and a humanistic encouraging interactive climate for learning.
- Working with the appropriate committees to recruit screen recommend for hire orient train and assign the schools certified and non-certified staff.
- Directing activities of the schools professional staff in the performance of their duties to ensure a high quality high school program.
- Developing and implementing appropriate Professional Development activities for all staff.
- Appraising evaluating and counseling the schools certified and non-certified staff to translate the schools educational philosophy goals and objectives into action terms that directly benefit the student.
- Prepares such reports as may be required to keep the Principal informed of all school activities and problems.
- Promoting effective communication between the school and community to create positive support understanding and participation for continued school improvement.
- Promoting opportunities for self-actualization by creating a climate in which staff is encouraged to gain enjoyment from their work develop their potential and take on new and interesting activities.
- Serving as a member of district committees to facilitate communication and collegial relationships.
- Assuming responsibility for the schools responses to Federal State School Committee and Central Office policies and regulations.
- Remain current regarding changes and developments in the profession by attending professional meetings reading professional journals and other publications and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field to ensure quality leadership as well as to prepare for possible administrative advancement.
- Performing additional special assignments at the direction of the Principal consistent with III.D Duties of Administrators and III.E Additional Responsibilities of Administrators provisions of this Administrators contract.
EVALUATION:
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with provisions of the School Committees policy on Evaluation of Administrative Personnel and the ISLCC Standards.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Twelve-month work year. Salary and benefits per contract.
