Job Summary

Position Overview:

Pewitt CISD is seeking an experienced and dedicated Special Education Director to lead our special education programs and services across all three campuses. This administrative position reports directly to the Superintendent and is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal and state special education laws while providing high-quality services to students with disabilities. This position will play a critical role in transitioning the districts special education services from the Morris County Cooperative arrangement to district-managed programs requiring strong leadership organizational skills and expertise in building special education systems and infrastructure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all aspects of the districts special education programs and services
  • Lead the transition of special education services from Morris County Cooperative to district-managed programs including establishing systems procedures and service delivery models
  • Ensure compliance with IDEA Section 504 ADA and state special education regulations
  • Supervise special education staff and ensure proper coordination and facilitation of ARD/IEP meetings
  • Provide ongoing training to special education staff general education teachers and administrators on special education law compliance instructional strategies and best practices
  • Design and deliver professional development on topics including IEP implementation accommodations modifications behavioral interventions and inclusive practices
  • Manage special education budget and allocate resources effectively
  • Serve as district liaison with Region 8 ESC and TEA for special education matters
  • Ensure evaluations and placement decisions for students with disabilities are conducted appropriately and in compliance with timelines
  • Ensure implementation of IEPs and verify that FAPE is provided to all eligible students
  • Handle special education complaints disputes and due process hearings
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for special education services
  • Collaborate with campus principals and general education staff
  • Maintain accurate special education records and data systems
  • Prepare required state and federal reports
  • Coordinate with related service providers and outside agencies

Required:

  • Masters degree in Special Education Educational Administration or related field
  • Valid Texas teaching certificate
  • Valid Texas Special Education Certification
  • Minimum 5 years of successful teaching experience with 3 years in special education
  • Extensive knowledge of federal and state special education law and regulations
  • Strong understanding of ARD/IEP process and procedural compliance
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills

Preferred:

  • Valid Texas Principal or Mid-Management Certification
  • Minimum 3 years of special education leadership/administrative experience
  • Ability to transition special education services from cooperative or shared services arrangements to district-managed programs
  • Demonstrated success in building special education systems establishing procedures and developing service delivery models
  • Experience managing special education budgets and staffing
  • Knowledge of rural district challenges and resource allocation
  • Experience designing and delivering professional development
